Oh man, been there done that at Ft. Hood. SERIOUS predator companies down there. The worst were the payday loan places and the rent to own racket. I avoided them but several guys I was stationed with didn't. And they paid for that, but they eventually learned.Oh this still pisses me off to this day. And no where was it more prevalent that at good ol Fort Hood.
I was 9 years in when we got there. I went through that week of reception and then came the last day, and all these groups come in. Military Onesource, EFMP, USAA, etc. Which was all fine. All good resources. Then suddenly was a fucking car dealership... I was with several other NCOs and we all looked at each other and went, wtf is this shit?
As soon as the brief was "over", another NCO in the briefing stood up and asked to address the room, was allowed to, and this SSG/E6 came up and told everyone, but "especially if this is your first duty station" to not do that shit. To wait at least a month. Rely on your leadership and those feet to get you where you need to go. She explained how they screw soldiers over.
I had the honor of being sponsor to several new soldiers coming to 3 BEB and as SOON as I could I would tell them the same. I'd get them where they needed to go. It was my job. Don't cave.
But as we'd be waiting outside, we'd all be giving each other shit for:
"Oh man, look at this. Camero with the dealer plate! Who's troop is this?"
