At the permanent party bases at which I was stationed, there were also any number of sleazeoid car dealers who preyed on the lower ranking enlisted. The dealers knew full well that payment defaults would eventually land at CBPO, where the poor kid's biweekly pay -- what little there was of it -- would then be garnished with little recourse.
Oh this still pisses me off to this day. And no where was it more prevalent that at good ol Fort Hood.

I was 9 years in when we got there. I went through that week of reception and then came the last day, and all these groups come in. Military Onesource, EFMP, USAA, etc. Which was all fine. All good resources. Then suddenly was a fucking car dealership... I was with several other NCOs and we all looked at each other and went, wtf is this shit?

As soon as the brief was "over", another NCO in the briefing stood up and asked to address the room, was allowed to, and this SSG/E6 came up and told everyone, but "especially if this is your first duty station" to not do that shit. To wait at least a month. Rely on your leadership and those feet to get you where you need to go. She explained how they screw soldiers over.

I had the honor of being sponsor to several new soldiers coming to 3 BEB and as SOON as I could I would tell them the same. I'd get them where they needed to go. It was my job. Don't cave.

But as we'd be waiting outside, we'd all be giving each other shit for:

"Oh man, look at this. Camero with the dealer plate! Who's troop is this?"

I’ve owned a CJ, YJ, TJ and now a JLUR 392…here are my unpopular opinions:

I like the new Bronco
I use the heated seats and heated steering wheel constantly (and wish the backseat was heated)
I would never own another 2D Wrangler
I would never own a Wrangler older than a JL

I feel like some people over dramatize the handling characteristics of the JL. Yes it's not a sports car, we all know this, but it's not going to magically flip over at the slightest steering input either.

That a stock JL Sport is far more capable right off the lot than most people realize.

That the same bone stock sport will go 90% of the places off road that a Rubicon will.

The someone who is new to Wranglers should drive their Jeep unmodified for several months before they figure out what does and doesn't work for them, then modify based on that.

That "fully modified day one" isn't something worth bragging about.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. If it is, replace it with a better part.

That everyone should own a Jeep Wrangler/CJ of any generation at least once in their life whether they "wheel" it or not.

That abusing your Jeep for fun is nothing to brag about, plus it's very expensive.

I think a lot of mall crawlers are born with the best of intentions. They want a daily driver soccer mom car, and think they'll hit the trails every now and then, but never do. They think that when they do hit the trails, they'll need a huge lift, tires, bead locks, lockers, etc.... but they won't.

And that's ok! Mall crawlers are helping keep manufacturers in business, competition up, and prices down! (kinda down.... current economy not withstanding....)

Buying a garage full of suspension, wheels & tires, skid plates and many other random mods before you even receive your Jeep that you have ordered.
Also, replacing the wheels and tires that don't even have 500 miles on them yet. I just don't understand that one!

Well said (except the Bronco comment)...Loved both of my TJs and my JLR, but heated seats, 4 doors, and a V8 sure are nice!

You may think I'm a mall crawler but these Houston roads require a lift and 35's to safely drive on

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a "mall-crawler." if that is the esthetic you like there is nothing wrong with it even if you never touch dirt with your tires.

Oh, I almost forgot. And I say this as always having had 2 doors, even my XJ was a 2 door.

That without the advent of the 4 door Wrangler, there would likely be no Wranglers (much less Jeeps) today

Eliminate the folding windshield.

Who does that any more...?!?!
I love the folding windshield for photography. My wife is also happy as I am less of a target for wild animals. Glass glare is terrible.

The 4xe isnt just a dumb Jeep, its one of the dumbest vehicles made in the last 20 years.

5 miles of off road use at the cost of nearly 1000 more lbs? Sooooo stupid.

You cant truly, fully, live the Jeep life if you own a 4 door. Climbing into the back to get my toddler into a seat that barely fits in there is part of owning a Jeep. And so is taking the family on a camping trip with negligible trunk space. A real pita.

I love the look of the two-door, but simply have too many children. I also knew my trailer would be over the 2000 lb limit that two-door has. Thank you for suffering for those of us 4-door owners. Do you have a Go Fund Me? ;)
