Hello all,

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am considering buying from a dealer about an hour from me as I may be able to get a discount on a JL Willys build. Question: Are there any cons from buying from a dealer over an hour away when it comes to warranty and the Jeep Wave program? Can I get my Jeep serviced at another jeep dealership and will my jeep warranty only be covered by that dealership I bought from, or will it be valid at any Jeep dealer provider? That’s my hesitation as I don’t want to have a dealership as a base over 1 hour away (that is far for where I live!). If I went to a more local dealer, I probably wouldn’t get a discount on the MSRP.

I have purchased 5 new vehicles in last 12 years from toyota, nissan, chevy and jeep. I purchased them all from different dealers than I serviced them at. Never had any issues with any warranty claims at the various dealers. No dealer even asked where we purchased from.

Specifically with regard to our Jeep, we purchased it from an out of state dealer an hour from our house as we could not find any good deals in our immediate area. We did the first Jeep Waves service at a new jeep dealer that opened two miles from our house. No issues whatsoever. They did not ask and do not care where we purchased it from. Their service was commendable.

An hour! OMG, you have to be crazy to drive that far! I line in Phoenix and bought in Tennessee. Get quotes from Chapman and Gupton (search function) and you likely wont be buying close to home.

I bought from several states away. The drive back with my wife, seeing the country, learning about the new jeep, was so much fun, we wished we had done it before. Find a good vehicle, for a good price, and turn it into an adventure vacation week to get back home.

+1 to this. I'm really looking forward to driving my JLUR XR from Idaho to Califronia in May, hopefully. Planning to hit some trails in Oregon and Nevada on the way home.

As mentioned by other members in previous messages, shop around! Realistically an hour away from you is like nothing! I’m in NJ and purchased from Koons in the past, 2 other vehicles from PA which were like 2 1/2 hours away, go where you can get the best deal that is better for you! You can service your new car at any jeep dealer locations

You'll be fine buying a Jeep out of town or State. Its not like RVs, where they put you at the bottom of the list or deny warranty service if you didn't purchase from a local dealership. Not every RV dealership is like that, but I've been turned away because I purchased my motorhome out of state.

Many of us bought hours and hours and states away from where we live. I too was concerned about the same issues as you but so far no problems.

But things I do worry about buying non-local, if you get to the dealer and they try screwing you. Go Gupton and that worry is a non-issue.

I do worry about factory or transit damage or other defects. I mean, what am I gonna do, 7 or 8 hours from home, stay in a hotel while they order parts. That us my biggest concern buying non-local.

Also, I would imagine the selling dealer might go to bat for you on iffy things. If that dealer is hours away.... well you understand.

All that said I've purchased 2 from Gupton. My dealer experience was great and my Hella was perfect, no counting paint defects, which I expected. The only problem was it took forever and a day to get it (15 weeks).

My Hydro order looks like it might take even longer if FCA doesn't get off their asses and get our vehicles shipped.

Good luck whatever you do, just DON'T PAY MSRP or ADM.

Idaho has the best prices but they wouldn't sell to me with a Montana LLC so I bought mine in Spokane Washington for $13K less than all the Hawaii dealers wanted. Saved me from renting a rig for the summer.

I can't live without a front camera so I'll be selling my 2021 JLR and ordering a 2022 JLR exactly the same but with front camera.

The sales department is in a different building than the service department. I took it in for a free oil change, no questions asked.

Dealer markup in Hawaii is $10K. Spokane gave me several thousand below MSRP.

I did my entire purchase over the phone and e-mail, from Chicago to Duluth MN. Had the JLU shipped to my house and have had 0 issues getting service at several local dealers.

. . . realizing each day–
All these comments are on target; still it depends. Do you live in big city or a little town? We live in a little town. I see the owner of our local Jeep dealership at lunch regularly. He knows my name; and who my family is. We have bought our last six vehicles at his dealership all from the same salesperson, signing paperwork with the same finance guy. I know all their names and see them around town, too. When we bought our 2021 JLUR XR I didn't even ask for discount and received similar to what folks do with Gupton and others. If you live in small town, build relationship – if not look for the best damn deal you can find–

I purchased my Jeep from a dealer in Ohio, negotiated the price on the phone then flew in and drove it home. No drama.

Has anyone challenged a dealer on over msrp markups? I'm not totally sure about this but when the news came out a month or two ago about Chevy, Ford and Toyota threatening to take allocations away from dealerships jacking up the prices, I asked around. This is still to be considered rumor but it seems that all of these dealerships charters or franchise agreements contain rarely enforced clauses that do NOT ALLOW THEM TO charge over MSRP. That could be why several of them disguise the markups by making MSRP the "price" you pay but add value-less, super high profit items and every possible fee they can make up. The "rules," if they even really exist, are never enforced but that was before. It's different now and maybe worth a shot?

To me MSRP is already too high and I won't pay that so I can't really test this info out but someone who is in a position to buy and has convinced themselves that paying MSRP is okay should consider calling them out on this. Tell them you know their franchise agreement forbids it and if they don't drop the nonsense immediately you will report them. Worth a try anyway.

I hope to be driving my JLUR XR from ID to WA by May as well. Did you order from Kent at Peterson’s? What was your order date?
