I am having a 2” lift put on by a reputable shop in town. He called me to come down and look at some issues. Apparently every weld on my JL(frame and all) has really bad porosity and some don’t even penetrate. He went down to the dealership where I got it and all the other JL’s there seem to be fine. The welds look really bad and are on structural parts of the Jeep.

Has anyone heard of QC issues like this in the JL? What do y’all think a good solution is? I don’t want to always be worried driving my family down the highway.

That sucks.

Take lots of quality, well lit pictures. Get a statement/affidavit from the shop that spotted the problem. Don’t do the lift. Bring Jeep to dealer and have them fight for warranty repair. Be prepared to escalate on your own via Jeep Wave, and also to go to more than one dealer of yours is lazy.

That’s what I’d do, anyway.

Keep us in the loop, and good luck!

if there that bad they would have to pretty much do a swap out on the vehicle at that point. Could be the robot ran out of shielding gas or a bad tip on the gun possibly a bad ground as well.

At least it sounds one time and not like a normal thing. These are supposed to be built tough, and right.

Hopefully your frame gets replaced.

I have 20 years welding experience, have 7 state certs and was a certified inspector until I was injured......If there’s porosity, craters, undercut etc it’s unacceptable. Ask for another Jeep...

I'd be interested to hear someone with your experience thoughts on this after you look at one...or your own?

I take delivery at the end of the month and I will absolutely be looking... I’d like some pictures but just hearing porosity and lack of penetration does not sound good if that in fact is what it is.. penetration would be hard to “see” it would be whether the weld was centered, equal legs, was it a filet or butt etc.. porosity happens from either a contaminate or lack of shielding gas... with that said and without knowing what’s permitted.. “x” amount of porosity is allowed...

Geez just one more thing that buyers have to look for. This is why I will probably avoid first year JL's.

Yes because another model year could not have the robot that does the welding fail and slip past inspection... Sorry but that reason is not a reason in my opinion to wait. There are valid reasons I can see but this is not one of them.
