Jeep Wrangler JL GrayWolf 2.0 🐺 | 2024 4xe Rubicon - Build Thread 1000005036

We drove our first Jeep (Gray Wolf) for about 75,000 trouble free and happy kilometers. Although it was tough to part ways with the rig that introduced our family to jeeping, overlanding and the outdoor life - we are grateful for the experiences we had and I had a blast building it up over the years.

Prev Rig Build Thread: GrayWolf Overland ? | 2020 JLU Sahara - Build Thread | Jeep Wrangler Forums (JL / JLU) -- Rubicon, 4xe, 392, Sahara, Sport - JLwranglerforums.com

My Jeep is a daily driver and weekend overlander - I drop and pickup my kids from school everyday which runs me about 20kms in the morning and 20kms in the afternoon. There is also additional errands and grocery runs that is another 50 ish kms.

We were wondering if 4xe is a better Jeep for our situation as we potentially can cover >970kms of local driving per month in completely electric mode. At the best case of 7kmpl (16.5mpg) that's about 140 liters and roughly $300 in commute fuel cost per month. Not including any weekend trips.

With gas prices getting record high here in Vancouver Metro Area, BC - Canada (Currently $2.05 per liter CAD) we were seriously giving a thought to trade in our beloved "Gray Wolf" and get a 4xe JLU.

Finally we pulled the trigger and traded in our Jeep for a new 2024 4xe Rubicon in Earl Grey. The prev rig lives on in spirit and some parts that we are bringing over.

---------
On the day we traded in our jeep, we actually went there to look at a 2021 used 4xe rubicon in granite metallic, and a new 2024 4xe rubicon in zenith silver. My wife and daughter are usually the ones that pick things like color etc. They were meh on both of those colors.

While I liked the granite with 4xe blue accents, it was too dark for my wife's taste and she dismissed that off right away. I was a fan of billet but the zenith silver was no way as pretty in person as the billet. While we were pondering all this and looking at a truck that came in to the dealership and unloading new jeeps.. there it was. On the top of the truck was an earl grey 4xe rubicon that caught both of our attention. It was the right mix of a fun color yet subtly muted grey. In the next 2 hours we had made the decision and paper work for purchase. Although I don't admit it, I have always admired the fun colored jeeps that I see on road.. so this was a marked departure from what I had before (Sting Gray with Black accents).

If this was a Rubicon X and came with painted fender and top.. we might have passed on this color TBH. That fully painted bright colored jeep was not our cup of tea.. it seemed like a WW-2 ambulance esp the High-Altitude trim ?. But the black fender and top was looking great in contrast with the brighter grey color. It is going to be a fun but harder path to making wheel and decal decisions on this jeep TBH.. but I am all for it ? ?

Yeah we were at the dealership yesterday too dropping off some stock parts for the old jeep as we remove and re-purpose some of the mods in the new one.. I contemplated dialing into JTS zoom call and live streaming the new build :P Wife thought that would be a shitty move..

Build Plan (Early Draft)

ComponentPart/Options Leaning TowardsWhy
Tires
  • 35x11.5 Falken RT01
  • 35x11.5 Toyo OC AT3
  • 315/70/17 BFG KO2
  • Lowest weight per tire possible
  • Reduce roll resistance to maximize EV range
  • Stick with C load rating
Wheel
  • Run stock wheels ?‍♂
  • KMC - Recon/Summit/Carnage
  • Fuel - Traction/Ammo/Rebel
  • I honestly don't know what will look apt on Earl Grey.. there are less references in the forum.
  • If I am running 35x11.5 I could postpone the wheel decision later and just run stock rim.. it didn't look too bad TBH
  • I am still unclear on how much lift I need for 35s and if the lift asks for more backspacing.
Lift
  • No lift + 35s
  • 0.5" spacers + 35s
  • 1" front and 0.5" rear spacers with FOX 0"-1.5" Shocks
  • Clayton 1.5 Overland+ Lift Kit
  • JKS 2" 4xe Lift with FOX 2.0
  • Mopar JPP 4xe
  • I want to see if I can get away with not lifting for 35s, with spacer and shocks.
  • If thats not possible - I would like to do the same lift I had on prev Rig - @Clayton Off Road 1.5" kit. Nice thing is I can always move up the spring to 2.5 if needed.
Roof RackI need one but not sure which one. Familiarity bias says, do the same one again - Dee Zee Roof Rack for JL
  • Low profile - under 3.5 inches total height increase
  • Preferably no-drill
  • Dynamic weight of over 160 lb and static over 600 lb
Dash mountingMost likely BulletPoint Mounting's new Rubigrid 2024Rubigrid is not supported on 4xe. So I have to settle with their 4xe specific bare mount. Only going to get 2 ball mounts at the max.
Fender FlaresMay be get away with not needing thisIf tires (35x11.5 on stock rim) don't poke, I'm going to just wing it without flares longer. Will add them if the spray gets annoying
All Weather Floor Mats
  • Lasfit
  • Novsights
  • Mopar
  • I honestly didnt like the mopar one on previous jeep
  • Leaning towards Lasfit - reminds me of the JK Willys edition mats from mopar - rugged looking.
Dead Pedal
  • SHEAM
Nothing else seems to be compatible with the 4xe. MORE is compatible but I wanted a longer one that touches the floor.
Lighting
Radio mount
Rear cargo divider
  • Cheap one on Amazon/Aliexpress
  • Splurge on AAL black powder coated adjustable shelf
  • Deezee adjustable cargo shelf
Rear storage platformnot sure how I will fit the things that used to go under the rear seats? May be i dont need the jackery anymore with the power box :D
Cosmetic and Decal
  1. remove that blue wrangler sticker below Jeep logo
  2. contemplate either keeping the blue accent or going all in on black+metallic grey accents
  3. Trail Scales paint protection for the side.
  4. Try out the mountain decal - if not order a custom one

Note, you likely have an extra inch of spring stock on the 4xe compared to ICE. You're a lot heavier, so stiffer shocks will ride nicer than they did on the ICE.

Congrats on the new Jeep!

You can definitely run 35's on it as is, especially with the extra 1" and high-line fenders on the Rubicon. I can't speak for how much flex you'll have and how the stock wheel offset will affect that, but I had no issues running around town in stock form with my Sahara 4xe and 295/65-20 tires which measure out to about 35.1"x11.75" on a 20x9(-12) wheel. Below are two pics of my wife's stock Sahara 4xe and my Sahara 4xe. The first pic is stock suspension with the 35's, the second pic is the 2.5" Overland+ with the 35's. I'll be adding a spare tire back on within the next week (93lbs) and also plan on a steel rear bumper soon, at which point I have a feeling I'm going to want to add 1/2"-1" to the back because it already sits right on the verge of looking nose high.

Thanks for sharing this. I think I might be able to get by with 35x11.5 on 0.5 or 1" levelling spacers for a while. When I do the lift, I am more and more convinced that Clayton 1.5" Overland+ will be just enough. At best it might need some 0.5" spacer if it settles - but that par for course even in my last rig (ran same lift , 1.5" ride-height kit +spacers)

Leaning more and more towards sourcing a 35x11.5 C rated tire. Falken RT01 and Toyo RT trail have a nice hybrid lug design, and going by the reputation of their AT3/AT3W - they should do very well.

No problem at all! I would say the 1.5" lift will be more than enough for you considering most of the 35" tires are closer to 34" (so about an inch shorter than mine) plus the Rubicon fenders giving the extra clearance. I'm running the Toyo Open Country AT3, and while I haven't wheeled at all with them yet, they have been fantastic on the street and I'd be very surprised if they were any different off-road.

The spirit of the previous rig lives on in the new one through carry over parts.

I have lost about more than 1/4" and less than 1/2" on the front after the steel bumper and winch. My bumper is not that heavy (stamped steel and less weight than mopar steel bumper).

I will update this post after I put on 35s, then later on if I add any lift/spacers

Recommend grabbing your shock eye to eye measurements as well. Allows you to true up Anndee’s shock comparison/calculator.
