mortgage is almost paid off. one more year.
Oh sorry I meant based on your definition of "own." Or do you believe you have "total control" over your house and property and can do literally anything you want with it without government interference?

I know that I can remove walls, paint them any color I want, and replace the grass out front with gravel if I feel like it. no one can come in without my permission unlike a landlord.

so yeah, I feel like I own it.

Ok, so now you know that you'll get warnings when things aren't working as intended with your rig. Unrelated to your Uconnect subscription. That your rig is communicating back to corporate with those details.

Now that you have that knowledge it's up to you as to whether you sit there and formulate various conspiracy theories about what they could possibly do with those details / with that level of control.

Feel free to remove those comm devices. Just don't be shocked when lots of seemingly unrelated things stop working. And, of course, the implications on your warranty.
Devil’s advocate— I get erroneous “oil change overdue”, “tire rotation overdue” , pre Tazer “low tire” messages. Could such effect the warranty ? I keep paper records, they saved me once with warranty covering a repair for my 89 Bronco.
Those without proof ?

A truck backed into my right rear tail light and busted it out and I receive an e-mail that my light was out. (2024 Rubicon X). I’m not signed up for any connectivity.
Yikes. Good to know. Wonder what else it sees?

"And why are you out so late, young man? Bring her home!"

If that link doesn't work for anyone, try this one:

https://archive.ph/7BWTO

there is no one who will give you this level of detail in answers before purchase.
So true. I see no incentive for sellers to get this granular with a potential customer. In a few instances, when shopping for a Jeep I knew more about its features than the sales rep. Didn't expect that! I'm supposed to be the newbie!

This is the sort of thing that people passively accept until they see it used against them.
Another truth. What I see here is that you, like me, want full disclosure of the facts around this while you, and me, are not going to get that handed to us in a clear way by Stellantis. (Hint: There's no money in volunteering what is not government mandated.) We can see by the surmising that nobody knows how this all works, and people likely sense how difficult it would be to get the truth of it, so I believe this causes people to rely on the apparent comfort of not seeing it used against them yet, in relying on manufacturers' past behavior predicting future behavior. Thus, these responses to that effect. But, I've seen elsewhere where advancement in technology makes the people in control of it think up things to do with it that skirt propriety. If we can build an artificial woman, why wouldn't we? etc. Things happen incrementally and time is on their side. They're working on it as I write this, aren't they? LOL. I believe they are. I've read about kill switches to stop criminals.

I would prefer the old fashioned way of letting some guy at a red light advise me that my taillight is out. Had that happen to me that way, actually, in my other car. Like you, I did not expect automatic updating/messaging. I've never owned a Garvin or a Magellan or any of that stuff so I did not participate in the motions of technology in this area across the years that apparently led to some of what we now see in the latest vehicles. Many forum members have owned a slew of vehicles across the years to have gained their knowledge. Heck, my last car is 40 years old. Has OBD-I, not OBD-II. I had no experience in these things before I bought my 2024 Jeep and, like you, probably expected representations from manufacturers to be a little more moved along than they are, in this modern year 2024. Instead, customers are constantly playing catch-up to whatever is going on.

I think your defensive responses here have been level-headed in pointing out where you are coming from. Only you can best see what knowledge and awareness you started out with, against others retrofitting what you should have known.

This is specifically my question and thanks for asking it!

Can I make alterations to my jeep that prevent all of the above from happening?

Try not paying your taxes.

What about violating zoning laws or local ordinances?

Irrelevant. the point was to show ownership and its benefits. a house is not a car. one is used to move the other is where you live.

So you're fully off grid in your homestead? The utility company cutting my power would be far more intrusive than jeep shutting off my satellite radio... but I'm prepared to deal with either potential inconvenience. Your list of house mods proving ownership...on a Jeep forum where you're trying to prove we don't own them borders on insanity. I've lifted it, put on 39s, skids, etc but I don't own it because they have control of my radio. Meanwhile you paint your house or do some landscaping so it's all yours?

fair point.

but consider your suggestion is the same as mine - that a company can at its choice cut things off. why not prevent that possibility if you can?

Zoning laws and local ordinances prevent you from doing some things you may want to do. That's entirely relevant to your argument. And completely undermines it.

But im ok with this. the only people who need nav are cab drivers and vacationers.
You seem to show a severe disdain for both groups. I'm guessing you never take vacations and never drive in a areas where there's traffic / accidents.

I try to take some form of getaway / vacation just about every weekend. You should consider getting out more!

I generally try to avoid doing any after the sale software updates on my vehicles. This goes back to an earlier Ram 3500 Cummins diesel I owned. Ram said it needed some bogus software update that would improve start up and idle. It did nothing for start up or idle. It was an emissions re-flash that cleaned up emissions slightly, but decreased power and torque considerably. I was pretty mad at the time.

I think this can happen with pretty much anything Stellantis has built in the last several years.

I have a '22 Ram TRX that is primarily a poor man's trophy truck that I take out of the garage once every few months for a spirited drive in the desert. I drive it to work maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Otherwise, it stays in our garage with the key fob in a Faraday box in the house. On the way home from one of my rare drives to work I received a message on the dash screen telling me I was due for a software update. I ignored it and didn't have the update done, and parked it in the garage upon returning home. A month later I pulled it out of the garage for a ride in the desert and the dash screen said "Software Update Completed Successfully".

How did that happen in my garage? Apparently my garage is not a Faraday proof enclosure.

My 2020 JLUR did not have WiFi that connected to my home WiFi.
I don't guess that anyone buys a Jeep based on it's cutting edge tech. Our 2015 Expedition has built-in wifi for system updating over home wifi. The FordPass app for our 2017 F150 still works for things like remote start/stop/lock/unlock and Ford doesn't charge for the service. The F150 is also still cranking strong with the original battery not that it has anything to do with what is being discussed. ;)
