Why is anyone surprised that a modern vehicle can connect and update over the air? Just because you don't subscribe to Sirius or the guardian features doesn't mean they aren't there. Guess what happens if you decide you want to subscribe? Nobody comes out and installs anything. There's nothing that needs plugged in or turned on. It's activated...over the air. As if it was always there when it left the factory...

Cars have been using it since 2011, and open source (no password) wifi has been around just as long, starting out in resturaunts and other public places.

so your car could just connect to any open source wifi and get/send whatever it wants.

It's likely not using wifi for over the air updates. It's using the same satellite connection that sirius/guardian softwares use. That's the point. It will do over the air updates when nowhere near wifi sources even on earlier models that didn't offer on board wifi.

It would not make senses to use unidirectional satellite link for software update while you have the cellular option at your disposal that is bi directional.
Common logic would be that Sat is for GPS and Sirius while Cell is for operational data and the SOS button. As for Wifi it make senses for the convenience of the hot spot connected to the cellular for your kid in the back and netflix. The use of the wifi hotspot as a wifi client to exchange operational data would baffle me as they have the cellular network for that purpose.

The power plug for the telematics unit is the big gray plug that you see disconnected. The unit is just to the right of the steering column. I don’t know if that box has the SIM card or if it’s the radio. A little more research will be done later on…

Do you have instruction of a less zoomed picture to properly locate the box ?

My 2020 JLUR did not have WiFi that connected to my home WiFi. Neither does my 2022 JLURD. The only WiFi-related thing supposedly available was the AT&T WiFi hotspot BS that never worked. That, of course, uses a SIM to communicate externally, not WiFi, which was not added until the 2024 model year.

A truck backed into my right rear tail light and busted it out and I receive an e-mail that my light was out. (2024 Rubicon X). I’m not signed up for any connectivity.

I read that a foreign leader and country was on the sanction list, but purchased to Tesla cyber trucks and Tesla just turned them off remotely.

It's hard to say one way or the other as there's not a lot of detailed info available. The uconnect system uses both cellular and satellite communications so I'm not sure which is used for software updates specifically. That wasn't my point though, it's not wifi based. Maybe it uses the cellular connection, maybe it uses the satellite, maybe it's either/or depending on signal. Regardless, it's not wifi based and doesn't need a connection to your phone.
