Good thing we have this thing called the constitution... nobody is disabling your Jeep remotely.
I'm gonna have to dust off my copy to double check, but I'm having a hard time remembering which article of the Constitution covers what a private corporation can do with motor vehicles it produces.

Once they are sold to you, bricking them for fun would amount to theft. Pretty sure that's illegal? You'll find the data collection in the contract you signed at purchase. Nowhere did you or anyone else agree to remote shutdown? Why is this concept so difficult? This tech has existed for decades...and none of these made up what ifs ever happen. I wonder why?

"bricking" the vehicle would indeed be bad, but we know its possible because it has indeed happened as pointed out re: the cybertruck. There are many other things they can do though, such as geofence your vehicle in support of the 15 minute city plan or display adverts on your dashboard.

to be clear the problem is not that they will pull the trigger, its that they hold a gun to your head in the first place in the form of that level of control.

Many, many people seem to be OK with this but I am not one of them.

Well... I'm not even certain they could brick the JL. The ECU updates require a trip to the dealer as I'm pretty sure the engine control and the bcm aren't fully integrated (not 100% certain as i don't really care either way). The Jeep is definitely a far cry from tesla as far as that goes. Imagining a theoretical gun to your head and losing sleep over it? Pass.

Can you point me to the article of the Constitution that prohibits one private entity from stealing from another private entity?

That part in particular would fall under state laws, but i think we all know the only reason a manufacturer would even consider doing such a thing would be at the direction of government... which would fall under the 4th amendment. Again, hide from the imaginary boogie man of you'd like. We are decades into this tech... not 1 example in the real world when it comes to America. Stay scared. All gas companies could simultaneously agree to quit selling fuel rendering your jeep useless, and even that is more likely than Stellantis sitting it down.

As I said - many people are ok with not truely owning what they bought and arguing that because they never saw it themselves it must never happen at all.

like the landlord who can randomly barge into your rental apartment, some are ok with this and others get a mortgage.

So...that's a no then? I'm not saying it's likely to happen. I think it's possible, but I'm not particularly concerned about it. I just think it's funny that so many of my countrymen like waving around the Constitution like it's some kind of a talisman to ward off bad actors instead of actually showing an understanding of what the document does and does not do.

I think most people understand that the constitution protects us from the government. Anything not covered falls to a states rights issue. Again, I'm not even sure the uconnect system has control over the powertrain enough for Stellantis to shut it down if they wanted to. I think Ford patented self Repo tech that would literally drive your car back to the dealer if you stopped making payments, but there's would be some definite liability issues if they implemented it. What if you're in it? Pretty sure that qualifies as kidnapping. What if you're out on a remote location on a hike and the vehicle leaves you to die? Manslaughter at a minimum. Just because tech exists doesn't mean it will be used against you. Nuclear weapons exist... and i haven't invested in a fallout shelter.

I bought my 2023 Jeep and for the 1st year I believe the uconnect was connected to a 4G network for free. So if if the 2024s are connected to tje same 4G network, that's how you are getting notifications.

Establishing the why behind the action is not that relevant IMO.

OP, I'm confused.

How did you not know about stuff like this being in the Jeep before you bought it and why were you so surprised?

Because one assumes that if you dont connect something to the internet that its not connected to the internet. This is not the case and there is no one who will give you this level of detail in answers before purchase. In short there is no way to know until you buy it and many users on here would not just be unhelpful but actually harmful in their answers.

I bought the jeep in large part because of how simple it appears to be in construction compared to everything else for this reason.

If only we had some form of search ability on these forums. If only.
