Once they are sold to you, bricking them for fun would amount to theft. Pretty sure that's illegal? You'll find the data collection in the contract you signed at purchase. Nowhere did you or anyone else agree to remote shutdown? Why is this concept so difficult? This tech has existed for decades...and none of these made up what ifs ever happen. I wonder why?
Literally, decades. OnStar has been used by General Motors since 1996 with the ability to remotely disable its vehicles here in the US. That was all done via GPS location and commands sent over cellular network just like Jeep does now.

The paranoid will agree, nothing on the scale of government shutting down people’s cars for nefarious purposes has happened….”yet”.

Just like I could fall in the shower and die tomorrow, or have a heart attack, or win the lottery and never have to work again, I’m going to continue living life with risk abound. And if we get to a point where the government is shutting off people’s cars, it ain’t gonna matter anyway.

NPC…really? Society has people like the OP so god damned afraid of everything, I really don’t think it’s people like me who lack independent thought. Fear is control, and the paranoid might as well be wearing a muzzle and collar. Lock that microwave up at night, it’s gonna gitcha…!

I appreciate this, and I don't mean that sarcastically. You bring up good points.

My philosophy has always been that people should be innocent before proven guilty.

However its the opposite when dealing with business or government - guilty before proven innocent.

Many people would agree with the above sentiment but the difference is living it. I simply do not trust a corporation because of the motive which is anything but the customer after he purchases.

Its not unreasonable then to try to mitigate this as much as you can. You may disagree with the premise but calling me a whiner then suggesting I need a safe space is what I mean about harmful input rather than useless input on a forum.

if asking the question gets ridicule on here then the user is made fun of for asking is that actually help?

Because one assumes that if you dont connect something to the internet that its not connected to the internet. This is not the case and there is no one who will give you this level of detail in answers before purchase. In short there is no way to know until you buy it and many users on here would not just be unhelpful but actually harmful in their answers.

I bought the jeep in large part because of how simple it appears to be in construction compared to everything else for this reason.
My point is that this is 2024. Stories about manufacturers putting this crap in cars go back almost 30 years. You would have to go out of your way to not know this at some point. Which is why I ask how you could not know. My only guess at this point is willful ignorance.

Dude, you are like the master of snark with plausible deniability. I'd ask you to teach me your ways, but I wouldn't want to be rude.
The force is strong with this one.

Yep, I tend to call out people that make ludicrous absolute statements and those that are convinced that there are massive conspiracies against them. My bad.

Did you seriously need to have someone here explain how turbos work? I missed that thread. I'm guessing you spoke as if you knew what you were talking about.

So... willful ignorance.

Assuming that modern devices don't connect on their own is naive at best.

We shouldn't criticize people for not knowing how turbos work. We all start out not knowing. Nothing wrong with showing up and asking technical questions with the intention of gaining knowledge.

But making assertions based on uninformed beliefs is something else.

It’s like that damn ESS button! One day the tree huggers will take that button away. Kind of like seat belts, real gasoline, R12/22 refrigerant, air bags, and the list goes on and on. You’re being forced down a funnel and most just don’t know that it’s for your own, and the greater good. Barf!

seriously? so let me get this straight - anyone buying a vehicle should join a forum, read all the articles, study the schematics and if they don't its all on them if they miss a few obscure parts that no one would answer anyway?

In marketing its called "barrier to entry". if a customer has to do work to buy then they dont buy. I studied this for about 2 months before buying and still ran into this. the devil as they say is in the details and the devil caught me because there was literally no place that would answer this question without being mocked for asking like I am now having found it out

well first off the paper work is an ultimatum - if you dont sign it you dont get the jeep.

second off the phrasing is always generic as to cover basically everything.
