Same issue here with the XR and the bump stops. After adding a front bumper, winch, and sliders they were touching the pads. I ended up replacing the springs and shocks. I don't think I would order the package if I were to do it again. Unless you could get it with 37's . . . ?

The mm increase in tube thickness adds only a few % in strength. It's nothing like the change from the JK to the JL.

Tube strength goes up as the fourth power, and it is called Moment of Inertia, or Inertial Stiffness. JL vs JK:

3.14159265 × (D4 - d4) ÷ 64
(70^4 - 63.65^4) ÷ (62.5^4 - 56.15^4) × 100% = +43% stiffer (JL axle)

Bending the axles has nothing to do with tire diameter. It's the mass of the vehicle and the skinny petal. Breaking driveline is different, R cross F.
Should clarify. *haven't broken anything in 22k miles.

What springs/shocks did you go with?

I wonder, if the XR is ordered with the steel bumpers are the springs changed for the additional weight over the front?

Jeep only offered the XR package to compete with the Bronco 35" package. Now that you can get a Bronco with 37s, Jeep will soon follow.

So the general consensus seems to be when stock the XR is ok with no hardcore wheeling but when adding bumpers/winches/sliders, etc. the springs/shocks are set up super soft and more clearance is needed. I'm guessing any of the models with the 35's stock like the High Tide as well will have this problem.

I’ve already hit the bump stops driving around town.
I also have an XR (392). And while I agree the uptravel is limited and really should be more, I have only hit my bumps when wheeling on the dunes, and not being careful.

I wonder what your bump gap looked like before you put the heavier bumper and winch on. Possibly that is making the gap smaller / worse (?)

I've definitely made mine worse (3.6-XR) with sliders, skids, front bumper and winch. I just ran by the local off road shop and they are recommending a 2.5 inch lift. They were surprised that I was basically resting on the bumps on the front end.

I have a jlu xr 3.6. Started with plastic bumpers. I have a winch and a steel front stubby. Plastic rear. Oem rails. I’m on ko2s 37s which run small, which I preferred. Idk what is considered “hard wheeling.” I hit most of the so cal trails from big bear to San Diego and maybe hit the bumps twice. My two cents is run your rig on trails before lifting it. It might suprised you that the xr is very capable. I do agree that it needs a little more flex. Just my 2 cents.

I believe it was around 1.25” to a max of 1.5”. So it dropped between 0.75” to 1” with the winch.

Take a look at the pic I posted initially - the same winch and bumper was on my 4XE. And you can see closer to 2” of travel. I knew about the bump stops when I ordered the XR. I just had no idea I would have practically no up travel. I’ve already picked out my hydraulic bump stops that I’ll install when I throw the spacer in.

I didn't have the same luck as you. After my bumper and winch install I was hitting my bump stops driving in town. It basically made mine non drivable. The very minimum would have been to add spacers which wasn't a solution for me.
