2012 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited Ecodiesel
The front shocks have 7-1/8" of travel. A 2.0/3.6 non-XR Rubicon has 7-7/8" of travel, but has about 1/2" of stroke wasted due to the bump stops length. Assuming the XR bump stops are exactly 1" longer, the useful travel should be almost the same.


What's your shock eye-to-eye length at ride height? Should be around 21.5"
Just no uptravel...lol

Eye to eye the way it’s sitting now is 19.5”.
I Can’t decide whether to spend a little and try and fix it, or just go all in on a lift. I’m a bit disappointed either way. I don’t want to throw more money at it because besides the bottoming out I like the ride.

I Can’t decide whether to spend a little and try and fix it, or just go all in on a lift. I’m a bit disappointed either way. I don’t want to throw more money at it because besides the bottoming out I like the ride.
I mentioned this in another response but a spacer totally fixed this issue for me. $45 and takes an hour to install - not a big investment of money or time.

I mentioned this in another response but a spacer totally fixed this issue for me. $45 and takes an hour to install - not a big investment of money or time.
I’ll try that first. Cheers

I just installed my mopar steel bumper and zeon 10-S. I drooped about three quarter inch along with the factory half inch rake. Unlike my 2018 sport did when I added those two things and had a quit distinct negative change in driving manners my XR did not. On my 2018 I had a set of springs made to compensate for the weight and droop. Because my XR is still driving and handling like before I am going to add a one inch spacer and I'm sure that will be all that is needed. By the way, loving my XR!

Does yours have the extended bump stops? My setup is very similar and I have maybe 1/2 inch between bump stop and bottoming out.

So, forgive the ignorance here... But are we saying that the gap between the orange/red thing and the black numbered part is the critical thing to look at? This is the bump stop gap? And... if it's less than an inch, which appears to be the case in this photo, then that means you are not going to have any up-travel and you won't get enough flex out of your suspension?
I just picked up my XR, and my shock looks much like this pic. Does that mean that, even though I am now on 35s and a small lift, that this new Rubi XR is going to really not perform much better than my previous JLUR (non-XR) on something like Poison Spider?

Apparently is depends on how you drive and the amount of weight added in accessories.
My gap as seen in that picture is 1/2". I just ordered a set of TeraFlex spacers and will try that first as a fix. My personal opinion is the XR isn't anymore capable offroad than a non XR Rubicon with 35's but I'm sure someone would love to argue otherwise.

Pretty much. The orange/red thing is your actual bump stop - it's a foam piece designed to cushion the axle bump pad (black part with numbering inside the spring) as it makes contact with the jounce tube (tube that the orange/red bump stop is inserted into). As the axle travels upward, it will make contact sooner due to the length of the jounce tube in the XR. How many inches of travel you have is something that most lifts have you tune due to spring and shock length and tire size. A number of the XRs appear to have longer-than-desired jounce tubes that do limit axle up travel and therefore flex and also make it so the suspension bottoms out easier.

My neighbor has the Mopar lift on his non-XR Rubi and the gap is 3+ inches with the different jounce tube length.

Thanks; my concern is that it's actually LESS capable because of the reduced up-travel. I had a Rubi on stock 33s and stock height. A few hours, a cutting implement, and some sweet Fox or King bumps and you'll be set. You can cut the jounce tube down and install the bumps. Will take some tuning to get the length right (they're adjustable), but they're a solid option. Or a lift. Or both.

Didn't you buy it for more than the tire height and small lift? Think about the positives; otherwise, yeah, it would have been better to buy a better tire and lift.

Is it confirmed that there is a difference in the springs that come from the factory if you order the steel bumper group on the XR? And if so, is it confirmed that there is a difference in the spacing on the bump stop with such springs? I would go out to the garage and measure, but I'm waiting on Jeep to build my XR with the steel bumper group ...
