They both are just an additional expense up front, that one is paying for. They are not needed! IMO.

The JL does 0-60 in ~6.1... but 7.1 for the Silverado turbo 4 is faster?
Nope, my mistake. That's why I said "I believe" and not "I know"...I got that from the Chevy vs. Ford discussions where the Chevy guys love their turbo 4 as much as the 2.0t fanboys here.

But the point still stands - the standard V8's in 5500lb full-size trucks are faster than the JL with either standard engine, and those trucks are not fast.

6s 0-60 is quick for anything that can run the Rubicon trail period.
Ah...ok see you didn't add that qualification BEFORE. That's better.

Which is why I don't understand guys with a 392 putting 37's and 40's on them.
Maybe you're thinking they should be putting 30s on their 392s? They'd be faster and more economical!

Don't forget the off roading community is a tiny fraction of the Jeep ownership.
Don't forget the off roading community is what drives the image of Jeep ownership. Take away that image and watch sales plummet. They're buying an image, which might be shocking to you, but it's not an image of cruising around mall parking lots.

I've always maintained that the on road performance is the most impressive part considering that the best off road vehicle ever from any factory is as quick and handles as well as it does. Better off road than any previous CJ/wrangler and lightyears better on road. Nobody is surprised that modern vehicles that weigh basically the same are quicker with v8s, they should be. Still doesn't explain how Ford makes the Bronco so slow though?

Man I would love to see a shit slammed 392 on some 28" slicks.

No the point was that full-size trucks with their standard V8s (like the GM 5.3 or Ford 5.0), which ARE NOT FAST, are faster than the much lighter JL with either standard motor. I think it was the transitive property that we learned about in school that dictates that based on the above outlined facts, the JL is not fast.

Quick Google search says 5.3L Silverado is slower than their 2.7Lt. I don't know about your school, but 7.8-8.1s is way slower than 6.1s at the ones I went to. Sure the v8 sounds more powerful, but moving air doesn't equate to moving the vehicle obviously.

Like I said, all those off road competitors have more power on paper... and manage to still be slower (and far worse offroad). Even the grand national only managed 245hp out of its larger and turbocharged v6. Is the JL beating modern sports cars? Only if you let me pick the track. Is it impressive just how quick it manages to be with its little minivan v6? Hell yes it is. I don't get the 40 year old motor argument either, go back 40 years from that fox body 5.0L... and you still had 200hp v8s? Maybe it's not simply an age question?
Well- yeah and back another 15 years from 40 it got worse. However, it was completely different for the prior 10 years with up to ~560 HP rated 430, underrated 425-450 HP BB’s and 370-75 HP SB’s. OK gross, so not quite as good as the numbers but circa 60 years ago. ….. 65 years ago my cousins 409 powered 55 Chevy ran 12+- seconds. A factory 392 Wrangler is only ~1 second slower, impressive for what it is…… The 60’s- 71 cars are in a class of their own, then crap until about 90- The Buick V6 being officially the fastest muscle car for it’s time is a perfect example.

This topic is starting to look like a circular firing squad.

Let’s compare;
F-4 Phantoms to F-35’s
The first micro waves, home audio equipment, medical procedures, communications equipment, etc. Go back far enough, sometimes not very far and you will find quantum leaps in performance gaps between objects used today and in the past for obtaining similar results.
What did JEEPS have under the hood in the 80’s, 2.5, 4.2, even the 304 was a turd when compared to other engines back in the same time period.

The 4.0L still has a weird cult following and legendary status... for 190hp.

My guy, both the Silverado 5.3l and the F150 5.0l run sub 6s 0-60 and sub 15s 1/4 mile...bone stock, all day. That I know. My quick Google searched turned up nothing close to your numbers. I make no claims about the GM 4cyl turbo because I don't know and really don't care.

Yes and I had two of 4.0’s. When introduced it was pretty well respected.
I knew a guy that had a Cherokee pu with one. That bugger was pretty quick.
Things either disappear or evolve, hopefully only the worst things will disappear 😉

Edit: Jeep Comanche, not Cherokee. 🤪
