Wiring a new winch

I recently had my JL to a dealership & they had to remove old winch power cable & ground and then install new ones. I got the bill and it was $800 labor. The winch was already on and only needed wired. I have a feeling I got royally screwed.

OP needs to join a Jeep club. All this would have cost is a 6 pack and and afternoon with friends.

Before any work was done, did you have the shop provide you with an estimate the price for parts and labor? Did you authorize the work? Did you tell them not to do any repairs beyond the agreed on estimate without contacting you first?

The best thing here is for the OP to show the dealer's work order. This would explain quite a bit as ChevyMitchell mentioned.

Why did they have to remove the old cables?

The Jeep was there for warranty work. They called me & said the winch wires had been routed close to a pulley & ended up rubbing and were frayed bad. They asked if I wanted to replace them or have them do the work. I'm in the middle of some health issues so I told them to fix it. I knew I'd overpay, but I was expecting $200 or so.

Good grief. Did they at least kiss you after they screwed you!? Sorry OP, but that is highway robbery. I hate seeing people get taken advantage of like that.

A box of chocolates would have been nice too. But nothing.

Did they explain what they would be doing and how much it would cost before they did it?

They said what they were going to do, but didn't mention the cables would cost more than the winch.
