Note that "for free" isn't exactly accurate. She's paying for windshield coverage, but it might not show up as an individual line item. Just like those in Florida that are thinking their windshield coverage is free.

The insurance industry loves having the government dictate that their customers are required to pay for what would normally be optional insurance like that. I'm not sure how to spin it other than saying it's basically government-mandated communal windshield socialism.
I’m sure it’s calculated into the cost of insurance someway, of course. But it’s a mandatory requirement for any insurance as I understand it. It’s not an option that you add on.

That's my point exactly. Everyone in the state is required to pay for something that would otherwise be optional.

If my insurance company allowed me to pay for windshield insurance I would gladly do it. I can’t imagine its that expensive compared to 1800 for a new windshield

You almost certainly can. It’s filed under non-collision comprehensive coverage.

Yes, but it’s not a dedicated windshield Addon. It’s just like any other accident/incodent and will increase rate

Nobody is forcing you to get OEM Gorilla glass, right? And don't let anyone try to tell you that calibration is required. It isn't. The box isn't connected to the windshield.

Making a windshield claim here in FL will affect your rates as it gets reported similar to a credit report for insurance companies. Went to stealership for free oil change and they had a glass guy there who noticed my recently cracked windshield, he made it sound easy, did all the coordination, made the claim, and then I asked if it was the OEM glass to be sure, I was in a Jeep dealership after all, nope. I then declined but it was too late, the claim was made and is now a permanent record; insurance rate with USAA went way up and I'm still driving around with that same crack in my windshield. Switched to Progressive after my ire at USAA and quote went up after they pulled the insurance report, still way cheaper than USAA though. Now I will only pay cash for windshield repair/replace because guaranteed they will recoup from you.

I have WPF and it saved me 3x already from needing windshield replacement. I don’t need the glass replaced, but yes the sensor is not attached to the windshield

AZ allows for optional windshield coverage. I've been with Geico for decades. Zero glass deductible on my policy, separate from comprehensive. Being an optional product I pay in my premium for it but do not suffer rate increases when used. And in AZ you will replace your windshield on everything. Construction, trucks, and rocks are everywhere. My Wrangler has 27k miles, is 4 years old, and on its fourth windshield with that little driving.

Zero rock damage off roading...go figure.

I wonder how the sales of WPF are in states that have windshield coverage on insurance

USAA didn't mention, if you use the glass repair for option coverage, it counts as an at fault claim. 7 of those in 7 years and insurers will not accept you.
Glass repair is included in USAA comprehensive coverage and definitely should not be considered as "at fault". But I guess that depends on the underwriter of your policy and your previous claims. Are you saying you've replaced 7 windshields in 7 years or just a general statement about at fault claims?

I have USAA and called them and yes, it’s under comprehensive and will be like any other accident claim, so potentially increased rates. In my state all insurance is ā€˜no fault’ and that’s bad news bears.

I do find USAA to be very pleasant to deal with and were actually cheaper than any other insurance for max coverage. I pay like $115 a month for full coverage
