So after 4.5 years I got my first crack and it is smaller than 6 inches so I’ve elected to get it repaired.

I was on the fence about using my comp insurance, but in Florida windshield repairs are zero dollar deductible so I went with it’s

The windshield hasn’t been repaired yet. Any thoughts between repair/replacement and cash vs. insurance. As a minor comp claim it hopefully doesn’t affect my rate with progressive.

These things tend to depend on state law, and enforcement trends.

E.g., in PA, not only will a genuinely small crack cause the vehicle to fail the annual safety inspection, it also invites a piece of payin' paper if an LEO notices the same while you're oot and aboot.

I was stationed in Florida, and I can still remember something was mentioned during my in-briefing after my PCS there: because the state didn't have an annual safety inspection program for vehicles, law enforcement was known to be that much more willing to light up and cite the driver of a vehicle with obvious safety and/or operating deficiencies.

You'd know better than I what the current dynamic is in the Sunshine State, so that's might how you might consider proceeding here. Were it me, I'd have the glass replaced as a matter of course. Our policy's Comprehensive line item has a zero deductible for windshield replacements for precisely that reason.

If you have comprehensive, glass claims are deductible free. My preference for repairing is that the factory applied windshield adhesive is done in a factory setting applied to a virgin windshield frame.

I live in Florida and exactly less than 24 hours after purchasing my new to me Rubicon a trailer kicked up a stone and cracked my windshield. I have Progressive and they replaced it without cost. Also, I used Safelite and told them I wanted a Mopar factory Jeep windshield.

My wife's Nissan Pathfinder's windshield got cracked by a stone. Nissan said Safelite is their official windshield replacement company and they use OEM glass.

Safelite did tell me that ultimately it's up to the insurance company to make the call on whether you get OEM glass or not. They said if Progressive turned it down we'd have to come up with the difference which we would have done. We have 9 vehicles and I am sure they didn't want to lose our business!

USAA didn't mention, if you use the glass repair for option coverage, it counts as an at fault claim. 7 of those in 7 years and insurers will not accept you.

“At Fault” that seems a bit ridiculous. Driving on a highway at legal speeds, someone flips a rock up on you. Really?

Unfortunately yes. When I changed insurance carriers earlier this year the vehicle record shows the previous glass replacement of nearly 2 years ago. If it happens a lot we will pay.

I filed 3 replacement claims with USAA in under 3 years and have never had a problem with it. You pay for the glass coverage.

I think it all depends on your state. Here in New Jersey USAA will only cover the glass just like a regular accident and it will cause your insurance to go up. It’s on your comprehensive policy. There is no additional separate glass coverage that you can even buy in New Jersey. My sister lives in Massachusetts and it’s automatically covered for free under insurance there.

Yes, your fault, because you didnt get info on other car to prove otherwise. I know, stupid.

True, I didn't clarify. I had 7 claims in 7 years, exactly. Never heard a word from USAA. When I tried to move a 2005 truck over to progressive, a partner with USAA. they refused stating you have to many claims, 7 over 7 years. Lady said it was industry standard to do it like that. Huh. So progressive, why do you insure my RV?

I sold insurance for a little while and learned Florida insurance is just stupid. The company I worked for would deny you insurance if you had more than 2 road side assistance claims (if roadside was part of your insurance).

Note that "for free" isn't exactly accurate. She's paying for windshield coverage, but it might not show up as an individual line item. Just like those in Florida that are thinking their windshield coverage is free.

The insurance industry loves having the government dictate that their customers are required to pay for what would normally be optional insurance like that. I'm not sure how to spin it other than saying it's basically government-mandated communal windshield socialism.
