winch wiring question

if I disconnect both the battery terminals on my battery, is the aux. battery still going to be connected? jsut want to make sure I don't fry my electrical system when hooking up my winch

You need to disconnect and separate the 2 wires on the negative side.

You need to disconnect and separate the 2 wires on the negative side.
My plans were just to disconnect the terminals from the upper battery. I was just wondering if that was going to disconnect the auxiliary battery as well

No.




Do as @jludave said and separate the wires on the negative side as well.

No. Disconnect and separate the 2 negative battery cables. Keep them separate so that they don't touch.

You don't necessarily have to disconnect the positive side, but do it just to be 100% safe.

Safety measure.

You should always disconnect the battery doing any type of electrical work.

I understand that but all you’re doing by installing a winch is adding two cables to the existing battery terminals.

It makes no sense to disconnect existing cables only to add two cables and reconnect everything

True. But if the wires being added/connected touch somehow, or the installer's tool touches something else that's metal, or there's a short in the winch, etc...

These things can happen.

These vehicles are very sensitive to anything electrical.
