I mean, I know Jeep basically expects the majority of their customers to do some amount of aftermarket mods and all that, but this just begs the question... what exactly are these little hangnail hooks good for?

I'm not hooking a $60k vehicle up to anything that could come loose by slipping an inch backwards.

Edit: Just to clarify, it's perplexing that Jeep sells a kit with a shackle that is incompatible with even their most offroady trim level. Shackles are indisputably more reliable that open hooks.

cafecito .. que pasa !

I see your point... why go through the trouble of designing those hooks when you could easily use that very same metal to design a simple D Ring shackle mounting tab that everybody in the World prefers and uses?.. it seems to me like a waste of engineering efforts... metal.. money..

It wouldn’t pass the 5 MPH impact damage rating if it had any kind of exposed metal on the front.

They are also easier to use in some situations. It's faster to just throw a snatch strap on the hook then to sit in a mud hole and try to get a shackle mounted.

I used mine for winter wheeling. Front got ME unstuck and the rear got 3 people unstuck... I like them. no problems with ropes flying off. ;)

Interesting.. ok... fair point.. but... why not turn that very same hook into a D ring mount at that very same location ? ... no front metal exposed..

With a proper sized serviceable rope that is under constant tension it is impossible for that rope to come off. Physics and shit. Personally, I would like the hooks AND the D-Rings on my future bumper.

No one could argue that closed loop is safer, but an open hook will function just the same as long as tension is kept on the line. And as mentioned above, an open hook comes in handy in certain situations.

If the strap is on the hook, and you roll back an inch, the strap will tighten, not fall off.

Ive used those hooks on numerous occasions to pull downed logs frim forest roads. Worked quite well. While D rings might be better, the gooks aren't useless.

Hopefully the OP now understands just exactly what these little hangnail hooks are good for. ?
