Crazy. Good you're ok, aside from some calamine or antihistamines needed!

At a simple glance, it seems like there would only be a tire, some fender and some body work to be done...but wow looking at those other pics...

Wonder how the CRV looked in comparison.

Damn, that LCA sure tacoed. I would have expected it to sheer a mounting point or bend, not serve as the crumple zone. Glad you’re okay, you'll be back on the trails in no time . . . or 32’ish days!
Zooming in on the LCA, it looks like there’s tire rub marks on it. I’m betting the impact was at the right angle and force to smash the tire against it and take it out.

If you have aftermarket parts on it, prepare for a fight with the insurance company on replacement. They MIGHT pay only the cost for new Jeep branded parts.

Not sure if it was involved or not but right after we got ours back from the shop our AUX battery died.

Sorry to see your Jeep heading to the ICU. I poured a quart of oil on the ground (shut up EPA!) in its honor. Actually my drain pan moved but let’s just stay on track here……

You might be the one to sound off on a statement I heard out on the trail:

ā€œIf you’re gonna hit something, hit it with that steel bumper full onā€

The logic is it won’t change your speed at impact but it could save damage to anything at the corners like the fender, knuckles, wheels and suspension. Doing so is likely to make the object you’re impacting (rock, tree, car, wife, moose, etc….) have to absorb more energy but you might just need to clean your winch afterwards.

You’ve been there. If you hadn’t swerved and just slid brake locked squarely into the CRV, do you think you would have driven your Jeep home?

So… Basically a flesh wound. A little duck tape, and a couple of zip ties you’ll be as good as new. ??

I had a related question... looks like a stubby bumper. I wonder if a full width bumper would have minimized some damage. Of course if depends on the angle of the hit.

i am the lead appraiser at an FCA certified repair shop. I would tell your shop to stop f'ing around and replace all suspension on the left front. cant believe they are only going to change a knuckle and the control arm (unless i misunderstood). we just changed a frame on a RAM and it took like 3 weeks for the frame to arrive so the repair timeframe looks a bit fast to be honest with you. id plan for longer. is the repair shop the one recommended by the insurance company? hopefully not.

Glad you're OK. It could have been much worse. I know what $60,000 in damages looks like:(. +$300,000 in medical. Appreciate every day you get to walk away. 32 days is doable. You'll have it back good as new in no time!!

Having a relaxing off road weekend with my daughter in my brand new jeep in the Ozark National Forest (Just traded in the old one 4 weeks prior). We got off the trail to head to this hole in the wall cafe for lunch. Beautiful Easter Weekend morning. Just went for a hike to a waterfall. Then I woke up in the ICU. According to her someone a half ton Silverado crossed over into our lane on a curve and hit us head on. I had my tires down to 18 so I was keeping it around 40 MPH. Speed limit was 60 and they were probably doing ALL of that. I swerved so it hit my side more than my daughters. Two truck occupants and I were airlifted. Daughter contacted 911, coordinated the good samaritans who stopped got all the propane and gas out of the jeep while they were extracting me in case of fire (Smart girl, only 17) and then went by ambulance to get check out. She was for the most part uninjured. Absolute miracle. I had 4 broken and 1 dislocated foot and heel bones, shattered knee cap level 4 concussion (I didn't know before this concussions had grades) and multiple pelvic fractures. Through the whole 3 months of non-weight bearing I was just thankful to be alive and my daughter was safe. Got a new jeep (didn't have any extreme recons like the last one :( but happy with what I got), walking again, back to work, and planning a re-do trip.

SO......It could always be worse, things will always get better, and it's just stuff. Still sucks the OPs is going to take so long to repair:(

Possible, but I think equally likely it would have deployed the airbag hitting a solid bumper with no crush cans.

Oh, no they're definitely replacing a lot. Both control arms, track bar, sway bar, tie rod/ends, shock, knuckle, etc etc. The shop is on State Farm's list but they're an FCA certified repair shop, too.
