You save whatever the spacers are. For me it was perfect as it allows my cooler to fit perfectly lengthwise between the box and rear seat. with the spacers it wouldnt.

I mounted the box directly to the tailgate without the plastic cover and it fit just fine. I used weatherstripping along the back of it to avoid any squeaking.

thanks for the tip! just finished mine up installed as you posted, had some 1" bolts and 1/2" spacers for the bottom from other projects. Just to add to the thread, in camp/cook mode a Camp Chef Rainier fits nice and tight in there, just leaves enough room for the fuel.

I just put this on this afternoon and it's going to be the perfect size for me—will hold my iPad Pro, hydro flask, lunch bag, and a few other things. This will be soooo helpful when I'm running errands.

Actually, it isn't very heavy. It certainly isn't nearly as heavy as I thought it would be.

Yep, and my 315 KO2 spare tire rests on the bumper lip, too. No need for hinge reinforcement.

I'm really happy with this box. I installed it directly against the tailgate, putting "md auto & marine rubber weather seal" (got it at Lowe's) around the perimeter of the box and on the mounting points on the tailgate.

I had some molle pouches from my Miata and used velcro tape to attach them to the inside of the box. I have put my tire pressure monitor, lug lock and Jeep tools in those. I also used velcro to attach my registration/insurance holder to the box. I have always kept that in the trunks of my convertibles, so this is as good. I don't want anything important in one of the locking consoles in the Jeep because I'd rather leave them unlocked.

Honestly, not sure what the point of keeping the plastic on with the spacers, versus just going straight to the tailgate with plastic removed like others have above. You lose the gap between the box and the tailgate and it gains a little more cargo room.

I shortened the spacers by more than half, but you have to have at least some of the spacer to get through the plastic trim. You are right about the full spacer. It really makes no sense. That gap was huge.

isn't the purpose of the gap to allow air to flow out through the tailgate vent (behind the tire carrier) to reduce the interior pressure on the soft top windows while front windows/top are open?
