Just so we're clear those Amber clearance lights are intended for commercial vehicles. The three lights close together in the middle signify that is a wider than normal vehicle. The two outside lights are supposed to be as far outboard as possible to show the width in the dark. Those lights are not intended for normal vehicles.

Fun fact a lot of people don't know Ford didn't put the three amber lights on the front of the Raptor because they thought it looked cool but because it's so wide it was required by law.

In some States it may be illegal to run those lights on top if the width if the vehicle is less than 80 inches wide. Those lights are considered as Identification Lamps and identify that the vehicle is a commercial vehicle and wider than 80 inches.

I don't know if it's illegal strictly speaking but personally I don't like the idea of people diluting the meaning of the lights by using them on non-commercial vehicles.

As somebody who travels with wider vehicles on a lot of back country roads getting to farms and and other out of the way locations field side I don't really want to see people putting amber marker lights on vehicles that don't require them. When I see those on coming vehicles it sets certain expectations and then to find out it's just a normal width car or truck or Jeep is just making it a pain in the butt for me for no good reason.

At the end of the day I can't stop anybody from doing it but I just want to inform them of what is actually going on and what those lights mean and hopefully steer them in the right direction regarding their use.

I don't also appreciate companies marketing them as some kind of "PreRunner light" and if you install them on your Jeep it gives it more aggressive styling. It's patently absurd and that shouldn't be happening. I noticed that on Oracle's website where they sell those. The only reason those lights are being called PreRunner lights is because of the Raptor.

The pre-runner lights came about because of the 3/4 ton pickups had the Identification Lights on top of the Cab and the three auto manufacturers were prohibited from installing the on vehicles less than 80 inches wide a few years ago. I believe California was the State that started the ball rolling on prohibiting them first.

As of this date, there are no restrictions on the pre-runner lights unless a State has a catchall statute on non-approved lighting devices for the highway.

Those are Roof Marker Lights/Clearance Running Lights for oversized Trucks, why would you possibly need/want those on a Wrangler?

I've owned several heavy duty pickup trucks over the last 40 years, both dually trucks and single rear wheel trucks. And I'm not sure all of these reported "laws" regulating the cab clearance lights discussed in this thread are either being stated correctly, or actually inforced. The reason I say this is because I have had at least a few single rear wheel Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks that have come from the factory with the cab clearance lights. One in particular that I remember was a 2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon. A Power Wagon is less than 80" wide, but Ram equipped it with cab clearance lights as a 50 state legal vehicle. I have also owned dual rear wheel Ram 3500 trucks that did not have the clearance lights. I'm pretty sure you could go to Ram's web page and spec out a new Ram 3500 Dually, and you would find that the cab clearance lights are an option for a 50 state legal truck. The clearance lights on the outer edge of the dually rear fenders are required though.

Not arguing, just find it intersting.

Looks like the cab lights are part of the DRW option, at least on the Tradesman RCLB.

I was actually poking around yesterday to see how Ford got around the requirement to be "as high as practicable".

I'd assume the option on SRW is for those knowing they'll tow over 80" width? Or for looks.

Well I am new to the Jeepin' thing and did not know any better. After having been hammered mercilessly for the last three days, I got the message: "duh" and learned my lesson?. I did learn about those lights and why trucks use them.
