Occasionally I'll see Wranglers with wheels extending out well past the edges of the fenders. Is that a desired "look", or are the offsets off and the owner doesn't want to invest in wheels that fit properly? I generally see this on a Jeep that, in every other way, is tastefully modified - so it makes no sense to me.

Function before form. If you're planning on rock crawling, you want the wide stance and extra contact patch. Also depending on the size of the tires, wheel spacers might be required to combat rubbing.

Some extra backspacing helps larger wheels/tires clear suspension components at full lock, especially when on Jeeps that don’t have the wider Dana 44 axels. Also a “little poke” isn’t too bad / looks a bit more aggressive imho. Too much poke is overkill and not that great looking, though, I agree.

Mine stick out but going from factory to 0 offset was really the only option for the wheels I wanted. It was 0 or -12 (I think) which would have pushed them out even further.

Personally not a big fan of the look and really makes a mess of the Jeep. I maybe get the function for clearing parts but not for stability, I think most do it because they think it looks cool.

I wish I could have them fit within the fender line, but the only way to get to 35s is by going to 12.5-inch wide tires, which in most instances requires wheels that are at least 8 inches wide and have at most 5.2 inches of backspacing.

Due to all of the above, mine stick out a little.

For flexing you may even see wide axles, 72.5” and wheels with a 3.5” backspace but those are for the really built rigs in general. Personally I’m at 4.5” backspace since it’s required for my lift. I’ll eventually go wider by getting the rubicon axles as well.

I just moved to 315s (12.4in wide) and new wheels with less offset. They poke a bit. I think it looks good. Feels more 'planted' as well. Does dirty the Jeep more and I will likely try adding the XR fender flare extensions.

Agree. There are doubtless some serious rock crawling folks that actually use this feature (esp in the OP’s part of the world), but the vast majority are in it for “the look”😏

For me, it was a compromise... I despise that pokey look, but the first time out, I misjudged my tire location and dropped the driver's side wheels down into a trench. I came within 1/4" of trashing a bunch of tin-work on the driver's side. So wheel poke it is, at least during the summer.

In the winter, I'm not wheeling, so I put the stock wheels back on to keep the salt & slop from being slung up on the paint.

I'm really not sure how minor changes such as tire to fender flare offset has attracted critics. If I don't like it I don't add it to my Jeep.

I see plenty of aftermarket metal fender flares that create this look with stock wheels and tire size. Isnt that look just a result of functionality?

I see various fender flare to tire gaps and never ever thought about if I like the looks, but about how that changes tire clearance functionality at maximum flex.

Anyway, I'm personally more interested in how I want my Jeep to look, ride, crawl, etc...

Mine poke a little.. I wanted a slightly wider stance but not overkill. Mine turned out pretty much exactly as I hoped.
