you might be fine,.. for a while.

i switched to 35s pretty early; needed more clearance to the bumper to be able to close the tailgate naturally, and immediately got the Mopar Performance spare mount to get it a little higher.
my tailgate definitely twisted. (no, i was not out jumping the J**p.)

as with so many people i eventually ponied up for the Teraflex HD item and carrier which replaces the entire assy including the hinges, and now even with 37s i don't worry about leaving the tailgate open even while messing with stuff on the tailgate table.

Stock is fine for 80lb tires.

The mopar tailgate reinforcement is a joke. If you go to 37s don’t consider it, just go with something like teraflex with better hinges.
Or one from Tyger Auto for a quarter of the price. I’m only suggesting it because I’ve been using one for over three years. It has been flawless and still looks brand new.

The Mopar tailgate reinforcement is to help tailgate flexing and helps distribute the weight. It's fine for 35" and under. I'm curious if anyone has actually had their hinges fail and at what weight.

Do you have any camera sensor issues ? The TF without reinforcement added adjusts the tire back to the stock bumpers and the camera sticks out more eliminating them, rated for 100 lbs. It’s what I got after -1 mm. High quality. Bonus, light moved to the center of the wheel.
The camera does not have sensors. The sensors are in the rear bumper. If you're getting false positives, you need to find a way to move the spare closer to the tub and higher. Relocation kits can work but are hit and miss depending on too many variables. Teraflex Alpha is perfect for this because it is adjustable in both directions.

Correct, next time I’ll put an ā€œorā€ between camera and sensor for clarification..

I have beem running 35"s for over 60k miles now on a RC relocation bracket with the stops extended out tight against the tire. First set of tires were Toyo Open Country AT II E rated and now running M/T Baja Boss A/T. Wheels are Black Rhino Barstow 17x9.5 with a -18 offset. Roughly around 105lbs on both sets and still no issues witht he stock tailgate. (Knock on wood)

I have aftermarket 35’s Once I installed the spare tire I had false backup warnings. I learned that my spare tire must have the valve stem at the 10 o’clock position to eliminate the fake collision warnings.

Happens every time I get the tires rotated and I forget to tell them to mount the spare at the correct orientation.

Researched this subject a lot before deciding how far to take the upgrade. Didn't want to do the entire hinge replacement upgrade unless it was needed due to cost, time and complexity. The general consensus was that the factory Rubicon carrier with some sort of tailgate reinforcement kit was sufficient for up to a 35" tire. The weak link is the tailgate first and then the hinge second. The reinforcement takes care of the tailgate twisting and sagging. This makes sense when you take the plastic inner tailgate cover off and see how the tailgate is made, there is not a lot of stiffening between the hinges. I bought this, https://www.extremeterrain.com/redrock-4x4-hd-tailgate-reinforcement-panel-2018-jl.html. It was relatively inexpensive, in stock and works with the stock Rubicon spare tire carrier. Works as advertised, no tailgate twist or sag. So far, the factory hinges are solid, no slop or sag. We will see how they hold up. An adjustable rubber tire bump stop kit was needed because the tailgate reinforcement kit steps the tire away from the factory stops. As others have posted, it is critical to keep the tire in full contact with both stops.

For reference, my spare is a Falken AT4W, 35x11.50x17 with the factory Willys 7.5" wheel.

Scott, you just kicked everyone here who has spent around a thousand bucks for a tailgate relocation/reinforcement, right squarely in their taint.šŸ˜‚

Joking aside, I love seeing posts like this that actually work AND save tons of money!

LOL, like the humor!

If I was running a 37x13.50 tire on a 9 inch wheel, those tire carriers would be worth the extensive install time and every penny. The value is there but not for everyone. Lots of choices is a good thing IMO.

I have the XR wheels and 35" tires and kind of figured, based on some posts here, that the stock carrier setup was good enough. Unfortunately I taco'd my tailgate on Steel bender during EJS this year. I ended up getting a new Teraflex carrier, it's so much better than stock. I wish I had done it sooner. Opens smoothly, doesn't shake, closes smoothly, just all around a better setup.

I’ve been pushing the Tyger Automotive reinforcement/relocation that now costs $309 - WITH HINGES. It will accommodate up to a 37, probably more. I’ve been running one for THREE YEARS in southwest Florida, with ZERO corrosion, with a heavy 35 hanging off of it.

Folks pretty much ignore my posts on that.šŸ˜‚

i didn't have hinge failure, but (as already reported) my tailgate twisted even with the Mopar tailgate reinforcement.
granted a Mickey Baja Boss isn't the lightest, but that was with still only a 35.

so i guess it depends on your definition of "fine".

Wow that's wild. I have 35" KO2's and it is rock solid. Doesn't even rattle on bumps or anything. I think you are the only time I've heard of a JL tailgate twisting.
