So I've been reading a lot of old posts on this subject, and there seems to be some conflicting information on how much weight the spare cover can hold. I upgraded rims and tires this past weekend and went from the 2019 18" stock Sahara's (65lbs with tires) to 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeak's and 17" rims (about 85lbs).

The tire fits in the spare tire carrier, no issues clearing the bumper, just need to make sure the spare is pressed against the bump stops. Also need to adjust the height of the rear brake light.
  • The question is if the 2019 Sahara had a spare tire mount that can hold the 85 lbs, seems close based on research.
  • Others have said the Rubicon Mount is higher rated for additional weight. Does anyone know the limit on that one?
  • Does an 85 lb spare warrant strengthened hinges for the tailgate?
  • Overall, what's your recommendation, stay as is, rubicon, other aftermarket.
Again, I did research on the site, but a lot of the threads are talking about like 37" tires and buying a Teraflex $1k mount, which I would prefer not to do.

Thanks!

I suppose I should ask what the offset/backspace for your new wheels is? May want to look into an adjustable tire mount at the least if its really different from stock.

This is one of the more common adjustable mounts out there rather than replacing the whole thing.

Teraflex adjustable mount

Their gate/hinge reinforcement is also well liked.

I went with the Cavfab version which needs to be painted/powder coated but is a tank and will hold up to just about anything.

You'll be fine with that weight. Just make sure the new tires firmly press against the rubber stand-offs. They significantly reduce the leverage the tire has to twist the main carrier. You may need to get new stand-offs that are a different height.

Thanks for the replies. They’re 0 offset.
Do you have any camera sensor issues ? The TF without reinforcement added adjusts the tire back to the stock bumpers and the camera sticks out more eliminating them, rated for 100 lbs. It’s what I got after -1 mm. High quality. Bonus, light moved to the center of the wheel.

I can see out of the camera no issues. I just now see more of the tire as well. I have to look at the Bump Stops as noted above to make sure it's flush.

And you're talking about this one?

Crazy how expensive these are, even if that's a cheaper solution. But I guess it has to hold 100lbs while driving / turning etc.

Yes, unfortunately I tried to go cheap when 35’s didn’t fit mine with a $75 steel RC relocation, never used after realizing it’s ~13/15 lbs put me at reinforcement weight. Got the $150 lightweight aluminum TF relocation brackets that served well….. until the 8.5ā€ -1mm wheels and got the Alpha. Time and money wasted, do it right the first time. If I go bigger/heavier and need the reinforcement it can be added.

To quote Billy Shakespeare, much ado about nothing. You’re totally fine with that wheel/tire combo.

i’ve had a Sport, I now have a Sahara and a Rubicon. ALL of the stock tailgates and hinges are the same; one doesn’t bear more weight than another (minus the Mopar reinforcement).

My Rubicon was sold new to me, from the dealer, with the exact same Falken Wildpeak MTs, 285/70R17. It was the same tailgate and hinges you find on all new Wranglers, nothing special.

Exactly- my stock 7.5ā€ BCD- 285/70 KO2 combo was 82 lbs. the Falken MT ~ 10 lbs heavier were an option. So well over the reported 85 lb limit…..

Mike, my question is, if there was/is a TRUE 85lb limit, why would they sell Wranglers with STOCK 285/70R17 Falken MTs, on a stock, unaltered tailgate??

Exactly, so when I went to light 35’s at a 90 lb combo about the same as the Falkens I didn’t have a thought of reinforcement.

It’s kinda funny and telling, brother. When I bought my 2018 Sport with crappy 31ā€ road tires, it had a Mopar tailgate reinforcement, yet my Rubi with the 33ā€ MTs did not.šŸ˜‚
