Theft Deterrent. Discuss

What is you opinion on a Wrangler with a visible steering wheel lock?

  • Good idea. Anything to slow down a thief, or make him move on to the next vehicle.

  • The thief or a random passerby is going to see it as a challenge, and target that Jeep specifically!

  • Waste of money. If the 'right' thief wants it, it's going to be stolen no matter what you do to it.

  • Why do you keep calling them thieves? No one says that.

Two Words... Vehicle Tracker. Make it a game. You find the tracker before I find you. I'm Joking... kind of.
To add on to this:

Apple AirTag with the speaker removed. Once that's done -- hide it. And hide it good.

Big emphasis on the speaker removed part! In as little as 10min, the thief's iPhone could be alerted that an AirTag has been found moving with them. And with the press of a button they can make the AirTag play a loud tone and toss it out the window.

However, if the speaker is removed from the AirTag. They will not be able to find the tag, and therefore may be inclined to then abandon the vehicle.

Imagine the panic on the thief's face when he realizes he's being tracked and there's nothing he can do about it ... All that's needed then is for you to properly adjust your zero :giggle:

Ever see how quickly a hacksaw blade with a duct tape handle can cut through a steering wheel? Lol. Quicker than it took me to write this post.

We currently have a theft ring operating here in Ottawa. They can have a Wrangler/Gladiator in about 5 min. So far the best deterrent other than a full kill switch is enabling the hood pins to set the alarm off if the hood is opened while jeep is locked.
They need to pop the hood to pull horn and head unit fuse before connection to Star rail behind glove box to make a key.
You would think opening the hood of a locked Wrangler would set off the alarm, I wonder what is the reason it is not configured like this from the factory.

I cannot see a reason it should not set the alarm off.

You'd think. Lol. But it doesn't. And the delaers her don't know how to turn it on. I've done it for about 15 jeeps in my local club. And installed hood locks.

Fortunately, Wranglers are rarely stolen. Yes, it does happen, but they are not sought after by thieves. Once you remove the doors and top, it’s even less valuable. A Club wouldn't hurt, or a heavy gauge welded link chain and a quality pad lock placed between the brake pedal and the steering wheel. It wouldn’t have to be tight, but not enough slack to allow the brake pedal to be pushed down enough to start it or for the chain to be slipped of the brake pedal.

Those of you who own full size trucks, especially crew cab 4x4s, even more so 3/4 and 1 tons, take extra precautions. Those get stolen the most, for a variety of reasons. The Mexican drug cartels buy them, and they are also useful to thieves who drive them through store windows or yank ATM machines off there foundations.

Not in this area. The Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal corridor is extremely risky at the moment. There are literally 2 or 3 being stolen almost daily. And because the port in Montreal is basically mob run, there isn't dick that can be done.

There is literally an African "Craigslist" style site that you can go to and see Ontario plated Wranglers for sale.

For the most part, the heavily modified JLs aren't being stolen and same with the 4Xe (they get stolen and dumped because there is no infrastructure to charge them in Africa)

Its quite frustrating. Thankfully between the hood lock, AMFIB snorkel covering fuse box and hood pins being enabled, if the piece of shit tries in my driveway at night, he will be met by me and a baseball bat soon after popping my hood.

Shame on you calling them thieves-they are just financial depressed shoppers working in the used car market?. Seriously though, if they want it they’ll get it. Things like the club and similar w may cause them to choose an easier target, but if your rig is what they’ve got an order for (or catches their eye) it’s gone. Parking in a well lit area, using a kill switch, etc. may help but no guarantees. A LoJack may help you get it back (but it may be trashed. Only sure solution would be a guard and a 12 gauge?
As idiot D-Terry Meza said "let there be a peaceful transfer of property"

I thought that as well, but Jeep dealership in Dallas told us to get a tracker as these have been stolen at a high rate recently, did some Dallas research, they are correct...not sure if they are parting them out or sending to Mexico; however, the cartels are extremely active in Dallas, as well as other organized car rings.

A tracker wont keep it from getting stolen. If you live in a port city, like the OP, it’ll be in a shipping container before you know it.

Sirius Guardian: I can see right now my Jeep is in my garage. Question I have asked on other forums: can thieves easily disable?

My wife has a 2023 XR...I know these are valuable to thieves due to the wheels/tires/axles...or just the vehicle. Due to the high theft in Dallas, we don't drive if much if it has to be parked outside of a secured parking garage. I parked in a sketchy place one day for 8 hours and did a quick physical search for a tracker...as my understanding is they can/will put a tracker on your XR, find out where it is located, then take it at their convenience, including breaking into your garage (this is easy).

So glad I live in a region where this isn't a real issue.

I'd like to see you driving two away.
Funny you should say that. My son-in-law and his neighbor had their F250 work trucks stolen at the same time about two weeks ago. One car with 3 thieves pulled up, two got out and stole both trucks in less than 2 minutes.
