Hi @Rhinebeck01, I think it just didn't work for my JL. Setup is pretty easy, I just tightened it enough so that it could be moved by the tailgate closing around it and then tighten it up. I'm thinking, for my JL, it needs to come forward a bit.

With the stock piece, I did the same adjustment. I started with the piece a little high, a little forward, and loose enough to be moved by the tailgate closing. I then opened the tailgate up and moved the stock piece 1mm more forward and tightened it down. Thus ensuring a tight fit against the rubber stopper.
@TroyBoy

As long as you got the rattle/noise addressed that is the goal..... whether you use stock latch or the aftermarket tail gate latch stop bumper.. :like:

Can tell you it took a good few days of me frucking with the aftermarket before I got it right... as in no noise.. I could not get it done with the stock latch.

Thanks also order the beefier bolts too. Both should be here by Monday.
When you say adjust what does that entail? Move this part around or finagle the tail gate hinges?
@Jeepmarkjl

I never touched the tail gate hinges... just kept fooling with the aftermarket latch stop bumper itself until I got it adjusted right..

Adjusted. drove and listened.. IF I heard a rattle, I stopped, got out and adjusted slightly.

I kept a small ratchet wrench and socket in the back for easy access/to do the adjustment with.

Was a pain and took a lot of small adjustments to get it right..

I also added the Velcro mentioned earlier in this thread.

I apologize for this being long winded, but I want to lay it all out so those that have been successful in getting rid of the tailgate noise can weigh in on what I’ve got. @Rhinebeck01

1. I have what sounds to me more like a “pop” rather than a rattle coming from my tailgate. It‘s more prevalent when it’s cold outside and it seems to happen most frequently when I turn corners instead of when I’m on bumpy pavement (body flex?).
2. My first shot at resolving the noise was by applying a thick silicone ‘O” ring lubricant to the rear window and tailgate weatherstripping. It seemed to help at first, but after a few days and a car wash, the pop was back.
2. Then, I ordered this part from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B092CJDT8C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 thinking it would do the trick. After holding it up to and trying to fit it into the opening for it in the tailgate where it would rest against the rubber bumper, I found that it was simply too large to fit in the opening and that either it, and/or my tailgate would have to give way by losing paint or actual metal for the tailgate to close. So assuming that the (Chinese) part wasn’t manufactured to the correct size/tolerances to fit the opening it was supposed to work in, I returned it to Amazon.
3. I now have the 3M squeak reduction tape ready to try on the top lip of the tailgate where the rubber weatherstripping contacts it, but am waiting for a break in the cold weather to install it, however I don’t hold a lot of hope for it since the silicone lubricant wasn’t a permanent fix. Thoughts?
4. I‘m open to ordering another latch stop bumper from Amazon if someone can provide me a link to one that they KNOW fits and solved the problem for them (if in fact the “pop” noise I’m getting is what everyone here is referring to as a “rattle”, which that part resolved).
5. I love my Jeep and in 35,000 miles and 3.5 years of owning it (bought new), this noise is the only annoyance/complaint I‘ve had and I want to keep it for the long run. Most of the time I just turn the music up to drown out the noise but when my wife rides with me, I can’t turn it up and we both here the “pop”.

Any ideas, help, advice, Amazon links or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm wondering if by chance the Tailgate Latch Stop Bumper you received was one for a JK and not a JL...

I use dielectric grease on my gasket back there. I have done so for years. Without that, I would for sure, have the squeak, etc.. Thanks to the dielectric grease I do not. Yes, anti friction tape would do the deed but I chose to use the grease.

It's the aftermarket Tailgate Latch Stop Bumper that remedied the rattle and clunk that I was having when going over uneven and washboard surfaces, speed bumps, etc..

Must say that the Tailgate Latch Stop Bumper and the way I have it adjusted makes me have to be more forceful... use more force in order to close the tail gate . When it is closed though it is firmly in place.

As I mentioned a few times in this thread, the aftermarket Tailgate Latch Stop Bumper did stop the rattle and clunk but only after I added a strip of Velcro to the Tailgate Latch Stop Bumper and spent a lot of time making little adjustments.

Perhaps @CarbonSteel can add something here. I know his install is on JL with a modified tail gate I believe.

Can you also share a link of the Velcro tape you used? And also a picture of the completed setup?

I bought one, did absolutely nothing, in fact is worse b/c it has no horizontal adjustment like the OEM one, just vertical. Still can't figure out why its rattlin

Well,it's been 26 days and almost 900 miles, since I installed this add on ..... It has worked out really well, but I was having a rare/slight/minimal, metal to metal sound when on wash board roads.

I adjusted and adjusted and could not get that very slight, occasional, rare noise silenced....

SO, about about a week ago / 200 miles ago or so, I took a neatly cut to fit, stripe of 3M Heavy Duty, black Velcro... the furry side and placed it around the bump stop.

You hardly see the Velcro unless you look for it... Anyway, that totally stopped any metal to metal noise.. In closing this add on works with a tad bit of help lets say.... BUT, yes it works!
I've ordered the Amazonian part + the bolts noted on page 1. They should be here soon.

Do you have a pic of the velco orientation on the bump stop?

You basically "wrap" it from the bottom to the top on the curved edge. You are cushioning the part that inserts into the tailgate space.

Just following up on my results using the latch mod. It worked great! I just recently returned home from a 3500+ mile road trip and the latch never rattled once.

I appreciate the members who provided the info here that resolved a very annoying issue.

I am working on this issue as well on my ’22 Sahara. Using the new block and the Velcro so far and still rattling. Has anyone had to use some stick on rubber gasket on the vertical side of the tailgate opening? Saw a video on YouTube as a fix. I’m running low on ideas to fix mine.

Question, on the pic above the black piece that slips over the tailgate latch, would this help prevent any of the rattle? I ask because mine does not appear to have that cover.
