Picked up a 2020 Sahara, remote and proximity locks, a couple weeks ago. Mine does not have a key lock on the tailgate.
Do you know the build date?

You made me get up and go look as I have proximity entry/lock... I never use the key so looked and I do have lock below handle.

Sounds like your tailgate did not get punched out and the lock guys said no hole did not add lock. Go look inside where the door guts are to see if you have rod to hook to a lock.

Starting to think February 2020 was the last of the tailgate locks. My 3/20 build does not have it, same as @Plongson. Anyone have a tailgate lock with a 3/20 or later build date?

I never have. It just doesn’t make sense why they would take them off, unless it was to save a few cents. I’m sure someone uses it.
I'm going with saving a few cents, you have to stamp a hole and insert the lock. And if nobody every uses it why bother?

My VW has no exterior locks. Under a cap on the driver door is a lock if needed.
Coming up on nine years with a Canadian winter-driven GTI and never had to go there, VW's KESSY lock system works great.

It made me for sure spring for the Jeep's "Remote proximity keyless entry CA$300".

Jeep's tailgate is without keylock hole on mine.

I have one of those Tuffy storage boxes in the back so when the tailgate is shut, I have a secure area in the back for when i am riding with the doors off and top down. I do have a key lock on the back and that allows me to lock the back without locking my doors. I don't know the logic behind removing the key lock on the back, That limits your options.

You might be right James. Mine was built in mid March of '20 and doesn't have the key lock.

Later,
Johnny

The key lock is needed for base sport otherwise no way of locking the back since it wont have proximity locks or electric locks. This would limit the ability to store gear using a slipstream top.

My ‘18 with proximity has a lock, and I have had to use it. Why? The locking mechanism is adjustable, and if maladjusted it won’t pop open via the actuator. (Just go on YouTube and search for “trunk lock adjustment” - it’s not an uncommon issue.)

My point is, if any of you 2020 folks with no lock get into the situation I was in, you’re S.O.L. Off to the dealer you go to be frustrated. In my case, I was able to open the lock using the key and then fixed things with a tiny adjustment.

Also, what’ll you do if your actuator dies?

Shame on FCA for removing a fool proof mechanical component to save a few bucks (while simultaneously raising the base price by a lot - my 2018 was a lot cheaper for the same vehicle, plus a lock!) Obviously they recognize the risk of failure or else they would have also removed the driver’s door lock.

Many new cars are removing the keylocks or hiding one under a handle cap.
