I had multiple opportunities over the past few days to need/want/desire 4LO. For the life of me I have not yet found the "trick" to make the transition easy. (I have an auto) (Yes, I read the manual). No matter what I do, drive/reverse/neutral, tap the gas pedal, all my previous tricks, I can't get it to move to 4LO without time, cussing and/or grinding gears.

Do any of you Jeeples have a "trick" or any advice? This thing is different than my JK.

Thanks in advance!

you need to be rolling a bit ideally...and in neutral...

Mine's been really tough too...even when slowly rolling. It eventually gets there but takes a lot of muscle to do. I've read elsewhere that this improves over time.

Same here ...

Been putting transfers in 4lo since 1980 and this is the stiffest by far.

One thing about these new transfer cases is the gear tolerance is tighter then in the past, I attribute the hard to get its in gear to that (just my guess). Notice that when you're in 4LO, you don't get the gear slop (the clicking when you on and off the gas) that previous models had.

I’m sure you are but just in case- make sure your pulling right and back not just straight back.
Also like others have said N with slight coast(1-2mph)
Mines a std and it was rough the first couple times but last time it just fell in. Lol

If mine doesn't go RIGHT IN 4LO when I first try(neutral,slow)--

I put in reverse and "FIDDLE" with the clutch-----bingo

Good luck

The manual says 2 or 3 mph and the main transmission should be in N or clutched-in while you do this. Just go from 4H to 4L do not stop in N.
Also be sure to get it all the way into 4LO because if not it will pop out into N.

Very true, the days of NP 203's and NP 205's are long gone ...:bandit:

At first I had the same issue but have discovered that if you shift it with authority it does go in gear pretty well. slow roll, neutral and (not a slam) but quickly with force. It seems to work every time now. Have not had any pop outs since either. I think part of the issue is that it's such a short lever and it has a fairly long travel.

I haven't tried any 4WD on the wifes JL yet, but on my JK, the first time I put it into 4 HI I had to really pull back hard to get it in there. Now its just a slight pull. So I think in general any 4WD setting gets easier with use.
