Often times when we off road we keep it in 4LO because of the rocks we climb. My wife is very fond of plowing through puddles with a little speed. It makes me a little nervous when she guns it to hit the puddle when she is in 4LO. Obviously we aren't talking any sort of crazy speed, I'm guessing tops 15mph? Any chance this is a bad idea?

And no, we don't want to shift back and forth between LO and HI since that is a total pita.

From the owners manual
Four-Wheel Drive Low Range — This range provides low
speed four-wheel drive. It maximizes torque to the front
driveshaft, forcing the front and rear wheels to rotate at the
same speed. This range provides additional traction and
maximum pulling power for loose, slippery road surfaces
only. Do not exceed 25 mph (40 km/h).

I see you drive a Sahara, but for the rest of the masses, 25MPH in a Rubicon is gonna be way high RPM.

I see your point the with higher gear in the Rubicon but it does not look like the manual breaks down the limit by model. Question is did they use the worst possible scenario the 4.10 or best 3.45 or pick the middle with 3.73. If it were me I would pick the 4.10 but who knows.

Don't forget low range is also much lower in the Rubicon.

I’m new to Jeeps, but not to 4wd.
I like to put it in 4 low as soon as I get off road.
It gives me the entire range of transmission gears back, rather than just one or 2.
I seldom approach 25mph off road.

Even in a stock rubicon with an 8 speed 45mph is only 5000 rpms in low range. Their suggested limit has got to be a limited liability statement to insure you aren't using lockers at speed etc.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum as @brazos . I only put it in 4L when i need to climb something or think I'll need the lockers, which is rare in the SE. 99% of the time I'm in 4H. It probably depends on where you're wheeling at I guess.

Just upshift?
Upshift? JL Rubicon automatic in 4L 8th gear can ~maybe~ get to 25 mph if I don't mind the sound of the engine racing or I'm driving downhill. Honestly, since 7th and 8th gears are overdrive, I don't like to put any stress on my drive train by pushing it.

I was doing ~25mph in 4-Low yesterday. The road I was on went from big rocks that you had to crawl over to rough gravel road.

I did not exceed 25, but I had lots of revs left on the tach and I could have easily.

The only thing I noticed was there was a "whining" noise coming from the transfer case. Straight cut gears?

I am wondering if the speed limit has to do with limitations in the transfer case?

I use Lo when its too rough to go faster than 5-10 mph without beating my self or the suspension/jeep to death.
It's really no big deal to stop and put it in 2 or 4hi. I prefer to not wind up the Tcase when not necessary.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I think I have been close to 50 mph in 4lo on the sand dunes. It is better to get the speed up for the bigger climbs and manually downshift as you climb.
