Hello all. So I have a cable winch. Smittybilt 9,500lbs. Can I just buy a Synthetic Rope and swap it out? I’ve hear that non factory Synthetic Rope Winches that use cable heat up the drum. Therefore almost melting the Synthetic Rope when you do a rope swap. While the factory Synthetic Rope ones have an “extra” cylinder that keeps the rope cooler. Anyone know?

Welcome to the forum!

Yes. It’s the exact same winch. Just get the synthetic rope from Smittybilt and you should be fine.

You may also want to change the roller fairlead for a much lighter hawse.

I remember being told newer x20 Smittybilt 9500 syn rope models had external brakes not in the drum. It only takes 140* to damge syn rope.

Perhaps because the Smittybilt X20 is submersible, there’s a difference between cable and rope versions...?

Watch out for anywhere the cable has marred the drum. This can wear the rope.
