Our problem isn’t the squirrels and citrus rats who seek refuge under our Jeep hoods. It’s our three Catahoula Leopard Dogs who catch, kill, and eat them.

The dogs caused $1K+ damage to my wife’s previous vehicle, a new van. A rodent fled from the dogs and sought refuge in the engine compartment. They demolished a steel fender and quarter panel trying to get at the critter. Fortunately, both Jeeps are lifted, and the dogs have much better access now ?.

Was driving home from work and got to the off ramp after about 30 miles of Interstate and could smell something burning. I am not sure what it is or were it is coming from but it is similar to burnt popcorn. Get home and pull the Jeep in the garage, get the mail and as I am walking past the Jeep I can smell it again.
I backed the Jeep out of the garage, lift the hood and start looking. Eventually I notice something on top of the exhaust manifold at the very back of the motor near the fire wall. It’s a hamburger bun!!! Puzzled and baffled how this got there. With no lock on the Jeep hood it is possible it was someone’s idea of a joke. The more I have thought about it I am wondering if a squirrel carried it up there?
Anyone else had a similar experience? I have since ordered a Mopar hood lock that can be keyed to the key fob key.
OHHHH that's where my bun went... I was looking for that

Besides chewing the engine wiring harness ($900 repair), the squirrels left this big mess - twice. I cleared this completely out, and within a day of the 1st event they were back with an equally large pile of leaves, and more harness chewing. After 2nd time, I clean it out again and put bait blocks on the plenum (I hadn't even had the car taken to the shop yet to be repaired). There wasn't a 3rd time after that.

Eventually got the car towed and had a new harness installed. For good measure I had them add this tape to the harness which is supposed to prevent chewing (made with capsaicin).

Most of the wire in vehicles is made with soy based coating/insulation whereby they used to be manufactured with petroleum based products. Rodents love to nest and eat all of that free food found under the hood. They came after one of my Jeeps.

we used to leave burritos on the manifold to be warm when we got to our lunch stops on trail rides,... sure someone didn't just forget something?

C'mon, fess up. You tried to do some baking on the manifold and you let it go a little too long. Happens to everyone. :)
We use to take cans of soup on our work truck and lay in the manifold in the mornings and it would be good and hot at lunch time

I have a similar story with a 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. After about 5,000 miles I started getting a burning smell inside the car, it never smelled like an electric burning smell but I could not ID it. Because the Sonata was a new car I brought into the dealership to have it inspected. After an hour the tech came into the waiting room with a black charcoal like wad and it smelled like burnt popcorn. After further analysis that is exactly what it was, mice! They were placing corn we set out for wildlife on top of the exhaust manifold and then it burned. After removing the corn the smell went away. It returned again after a few weeks, I removed the corn then set traps in my garage. After a few dead mice, the problem was permanently solved.

Honda has tape that rodents do not touch.

I have heard of this but tracking down wiring harnesses and trying to tape them up would be a bear of an undertaking. Most of the "green" crap ends up costing more resources than the old methods.
