I've tried your startup procedure and have had no high pitched squeal or the occasional clunk sound at all this week. Thanks!

I'm guessing that a firmware update will resolve this issue since the computer controls everything. I am hopeful that Jeep issues a TSB for it.
I’m almost certain that the noise we’re hearing is coming from the starter. Back when I was a flight instructor, the school I worked for had 45 or so airplanes. Six of them were Grumman Yankees, and they all made the same sound as our Jeeps.

When starting the engine, as you moved the key from start, the engine would squeal. The noise was the result of the starter being deenergized, and the starter solenoid retracting. Specifically, it was caused by the friction from the starter gear rubbing against the flywheel gear teeth while retracting that made the noise.
My dodge durango 2018 fitted with a pentastar 3.6 does the same squeal and thump, the dealership here in bahrain replaced the startor motor and the torque converter, but the noise is still there 3000 km later.
This is the sound of my car

Yep! That’s the exactly noise! Please keep us updated if you do take it in on what they say and any possible fixes.
Hey there,I have 2018 durango with a pentastar fitted,I had the FCA involved and the dealership replaced the starter but it didnt help, and later they replaced the torque converter but the squeal and the thump still comes intermitently.
Maybe if more people raise this matter to FCA they will issue a TB or recall,as the FCA say that its the first time they hear of this issue:(.
Hope theres a fix soon.thats the sound my car makes

Same issue. Subscribed.
Hi ape,

The final official reply from the FCA was that its due to the ESS feature, and is inherant to the design.
I think its cause by the heavy duty starter motor, nothing can be done.

I have not heard the noise in say a month. I used to hear it routinely. All I have done to stop the noise, is to not place so my foot pressure on the brake pedal when starting the JL....

Yes,that also seems to work for me,when I decide to use that car and if you have a remote start, that also works

Yes, no noise with remote starts is what got me thinking, got me trying the reduced foot brake pressure at start-up.

Tried light foot pressure on brake and it worked.

Around a day or so later while I was still watching for the noise, I saw another guy posting here that he too had found the light pressure on brake pedal did the trick.

Very light pressure on the brake peddle and the squeal is gone. Have tried it over 20 times starting, all is good.

Just a question, dont you have in the USA a "lemon law",that protects you when your car is faulty, over here we dont.

They all make that noise and I'm not sure it's a belt.

This could make sense about it being ESS related then. I have found I can sit at the stop lights with light pressure on the brake by just keeping my foot on the right side of the pedal and not firmly pressing it down. ESS won't engage even though not disabled. Then when I move the foot to square on the pedal and apply full force like when starting the car the ESS engages and shuts down. Very interesting. I'll try the light pressure at start up as I've had the same issue and always fullly press the pedal when starting. Usually in a garage so I don't use remote start at home. When at work I'm starting it far away that I can't hear it start so don't know if doesn't do it then.

I've continued to keep trying both methods and can 100% reproduce it. Remote start never does it. And if you lightly press the brake pedal and start it won't do it either. Press it down firmly and it'll always squeal.

I have the same issue. I also hear a similar squeal or whine noise when I accelerate. I have about 13K miles on mine.
