Squeaking Steering Wheel

The rubber around the inside of the steering wheel has an annoying squeak when I make turns. I have tried spraying WD-40 and silicon spray in and around the steering wheel with no results. Does any have a fix for this little annoying issue? 2019 Wrangler Sport S

I don’t want to help you out any further since you’re an ass, but that’s not how I roll.

There’s a TSB for a “noise in steering column tailshaft when turning the wheel”:

Upon further research, some people who’ve described a “squeak” whilst turning can only make it stop by replacing the steering column (see second part of the TSB).

By the way, a worn clockspring can make a rubbing noise and you could have a shocking amount of miles on your newer JL. If it is the clockspring, then you’d need to remove and replace the SCCM anyhow as it’s integral to the SCCM. Either way you’ll be covered.

Apology accepted. Sorry for calling you an ass. ?? (I’m ashamed and embarrassed). I typically don’t speak like that. I’m glad it was just an internet misunderstanding.

I hope you get the problem solved. If your Jeep is still under warranty and since the noise is listed in the TSB the dealer may fix it at no cost to you. (Actually, as I type this, I re-read the TSB and it applies to 2020-2021 model years, so they probably won’t fix it for free).

Looks like a new steering column is $615. ?. I’m always a fan of trying to fix things and perhaps if you took things apart that maybe you can find exactly what’s squeaking and fix it that way.

At 46k it isn't under any warranty. It only squeaks on low-speed turns. It really sounds like rubber rubbing against something. Certainly not irritating enough to tear the steering column apart (yet). Thanks for the input.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I’ve been dealing with this for the last year.

2021, just like most others out there with this issue.

Dealer replaced the entire column last year and the squeaking went away.

Now I’m out of warranty and decided to try to fix it myself.

Took the steering wheel off to expose the clock spring which I thought was the culprit. Greased the white plastic spider ring inside it and put it back together. Squeaking was still there.

Took the steering wheel and the clock spring off the expose the metal steering column that is incased in another sleeve. Greased up where those meet together. There’s a rubber ring and a snap ring where I greased. Reassembled it all. Squeaks are intermittent now. GRRR!
