Spare tire reinforcement????

At what point should one consider adding the spare tire reinforcemnt brackets? Currently stock 21 Willy's with km2s. Doing a small lift and going to 33 x10.5 or metric equivalent. Do I need to reinforce? What about the spare tire bump stops?

From real world experience. I run a 35x12.5x17 Toyo ATII LT tire. No reinforcement here. I extended the bump stops to be tight against the tire and put on a tailgate latch block limiter. 60k miles since I’ve put on 35”s with no issues as a DD or wheeling on the rocks.

33x10.5 nope and if on stock wheel bumps should be fine. if going to an aftermarket wheel with less offset maybe need extensions but those are easy to make.

You might need something to raise or adjust the location of your tire with larger tires (over 35") but the gate itself can handle just about anything. The weak point is the gate hinges but on a JL the hinges can handle quite a bit of weight (contrary to what the internet will tell you). If you go over 35" and need something to adjust the location of the tire, it might be a good idea to then invest in something that gives you stronger hinges as well.

As far as adjustment, for what it's worth, I have 35s on my JLU Sport and installed the Teraflex 4838910 Alpha HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mounting Kit. It was pricey, but very adjustable, super sturdy, and relocates the camera and brake light to new hardware in the center of the tire. Gate swings very smoothly.

This is a 38” spare. This is reinforced by Teraflex. I say reinforce at 35 inch and bigger.

If you went with 35s or above and the tire weighs about 70lb or lower, then reinforce the tailgate mounting point to hinge (similar to mopar tailgate reinforcement brackets).

If your tire is heavier than that, best to invest in a tire carrier with hinges - teraflex alpha and the likes of those.

There was no hesitation in installing the CavFab elite spare tire carrier when I went to 35s on Method bead grip wheels. I did not want to have a spare tire carrier failure on the highway that could result in something REALLY bad happening to someone else. I've seen the plastic carriers crack with heavy spares, and I've seen rear gates that sag with heavy spares. I didn't want either of those things happening.

The CavFab laughs at the 35 MT BB AT on the Method wheel. It laughs when I load it down with 5 gallons of fuel and a 5 pound propane tank (the mounts for these things aren't light...).

Running 35x12.5x18 RG's on the back of her '21 JLURD with the factory reinforcement and no issues. I added a couple of these over the tire snubber:

to extend them to meet the sidewall. Works great No issues with the tailgate for over 4 years now.
