New tires unfortunately load range E they are Patagonia xt 285/75/17. This is what it looks like when it gets wet pulling into a car wash bay. I don't have chalk to test that way.

Should I air down more? I'm sitting at 34 psi cold these were probably at 36 in the car wash or 35psi.

Yes. Air down more. Try them at 28 or 30. I run my 35s at 25 cold to get a good test.

Pressure can help some, but wheel width is also in play. If the wheel is too narrow the tire can sit as shown in your pic where the outer blocks don’t contact the road.

The Patagonia isn't a square pattern tire. The tread is supposed to be crowned. I wouldn't go below 30psi on a tire that small.
What’s the advantage of a crowned tire that sees on road and off road use?

I think in theory it would handle/ride more like a narrower tire on the street while still offering the huge contact patch when aired down for wheeling. Could in theory help with mpg and wet traction.

Heres a silly question - what is the absolute lowest a person can safely air down their tires to? for science!
Depends on the tire, wheel, vehicle weight, max speed, load while cornering, etc. There's no one answer.

Depends on the tire, the weight of the rig, and the width of the wheel. I've run highway speeds at as low as 17psi but the handling is squirmmy and the steering is heavy. Safely like won't come off the bead when aired down? I'll go as low as 10 psi without beadlocks. I've tried 8 psi but in the rocks you'll find the tires burping air and losing pressure. At that point it's only a matter of time before you lose a bead.

those are E rated 285/75-17 no reason not to drop them down to 28psi or so.

depends on what for. for snow wheeling 2psi can be done with bead locks...I run all week in moab at maybe 14psi and that includes running on the highway between trails..once we are there we air down and don't air back up until we head home..I found the 10% rule is a good rule ie if your psi raises 10% from cold to warmed up you are pretty good...ie if cold 20 psi and you go up to 22 psi after 10-15 minutes running down the road you are probably good..Toyo has a great inflation chart on their website...

whats a bead
The bead is the inner edge of the tire (the part that touches the wheel). The beads seat onto the wheel pretty tightly, but are ultimately held there by air pressure. 6 psi is enough to keep it there without force applied trying to push it in. Corner on the street and there's a lot of lateral force on those beads. There's also too much sidewall flex at low psi for driving at speed. That flex creates heat and with enough of it you'll damage the tires.

If your tires are cold @ 30 psi (as in after parked over night), You go for a drive on a nice 70-80 deg day on black top.......your tire pressure after and hour of driving at highway speeds goes to 33 psi. That's a 10% increase and is about the norm......if they go from 30 to 35 and it's not an extremely hot day...........you are under inflated and overheating the tires due to excessive friction.
Lower pressures for other than highway driving is fine because you are not heating them up at slower speeds.
