I just got off the phone with a Jeep customer service representative because my welds are also extremely rusted and my jeep is only seven months old. I am taking it to the dealership to have it documented because this should not happen at 10,000 milesJust wanted to give everyone a heads up on something. While installing my winch I noticed some frame welds that were solid rust and unpainted so today I spent the day going through the entire frame finding spots here and there that had no paint or coating on them. I wire brushed them and cleaned them with Prep-All and then painted them with Rustoleum.
It was weird. Like the frame got down the line and had to be spot welded after the paint work was done. There was a lot of porosity in the welds as well as others described too.
Figured it was better if I just addressed it myself. Still love my JL and have no regrets buying it. Just could not ignore seeing those rusted welds
I just saw this post after doing some searching. I too am having really bad issues with My Jeep every weld on it is rusted severely and it is seven months old and has 10,000 miles on it I contacted Jeep and I’ve contacted the dealership not sure what to make of this but it is absolutely not what should happen. I am only showing three pictures and they aren’t even the worst.Looks like Jeep is blowing the issue off. So if they want to play games we can. I just put in 4 NHTSA complaints, (Frame welds/track bar, AC smell, 5inch radio, and AC out the glove box). Just sent some of the pics to a welding inspector. If I have to I'll have it inspected and then bring it to the Denver News stations and associated press. I've also contacted JP magazine.
IF your frame welds are porous, incomplete, show not enough penetration, cracked, or have areas where the paint isn't adhering due to slag please turn them into NHTSA and report it to Jeep Cares/Waves.
Those aren't likely rusted that is likely slag. However if and when the slag falls off it will rust. Paint and powdercoat doesn't stick to slagI just saw this post after doing some searching. Sorry. I posted in another thread. Jeep bought back my 18 jlu sport and we ordered a 19 jlu sport s. Arrived just before xmas with hotlist. Much better welds and a much better jeep.@Capt-Zoom , you never posted an update when “things were complete”?
I have a representative meeting me tomorrow at the dealership. The dealership has already determined that it is rust so we will see what the next step will beThose aren't likely rusted that is likely slag. However if and when the slag falls off it will rust. Is he taking a bath too??We brushed, treated and coated at least 10-15 spots like this the first week we had our JL (before it was really driven) Almost 900 miles on it now so we will look again. Love, love, love my JL, but, as you can see from the pics, love my husband more for doing this for me

I have welds that look like yours and the pain is chipping off. I don’t even have 3,000 miles on mine yet. Let us know the outcome of your meeting.I have a representative meeting me tomorrow at the dealership. The dealership has already determined that it is rust so we will see what the next step will be
I am taking my jeep to the dealership on June 3rd. They have to take detailed pictures and send them in. The representative said they would probably just sand and rust proof the welds. The big issue is that my axles are also rusted badly.I have welds that look like yours and the pain is chipping off. I don’t even have 3,000 miles on mine yet. Let us know the outcome of your meeting.
Thank you for bringing our attention to this. I called the NHTSA and referenced the ongoing investigation number (DP 18-0040) to let them know there's more cars out there with the same issue. Hopefully that helps all JL owners out. I encourage the rest of you to do the same so the NHTSA has more to work with on our behalf.FYI: Apparently, FCA has a large document response due to the NHTSA on 5/31/2019.
Here's the link: You'll have to scroll down to the recalls/investigations section, then click the investigations tab. I can't get it to deep link to it.
