I have these, extremely sturdy, easy on and easy off. I also like them cause at least on the driver's side, you don't have to remove the gas tanks to remove them. IF you decide on the spare tire mount, just yesterday I saw a guy with it, then had a cable running through the tank handles through the spare tire. Of course that means one more layer for you to get through to put your tanks on and off. https://reddotengineering.com/product/jl-jt-door-hinge-mount-for-rotopax-packs/

rotopax solution looks great..
but it seems cost even more than the aux fuel tank..
is there any downsides from adding an aux tank?

You're not gonna like the price, but the only relatively secure fuel cell that I'm aware of is AEV's. It's also fairly large at 10.2g.

Spare has to be removed to retrieve it?

I ordered the same ratchet strap mount.
Mine will only be going on when camping or long offroad trails.
Gotta be careful, I've had a trasheroo stolen at a gas station before.

Nope. It comes with a self-siphoning hose to fill the tank with.
That's cool.
Always worried about adding too much weight to the tailgate though. Also when I camp, I fill my trasheroo with fire wood, probably 20 or 30 lbs of oak.

Here is my setup, there is nothing to keep someone from stealing this setup. So I remove and store when not in use.

Are they just ratchet strapped or is there something more to that?

They're held on by ratchets.
They would be easy to steal, just undo the strap.
Why mine is only mounted when camping/offroading.
But I wonder if I should loop a bike rack into the handles and locked on the spare wheel.

Oh for sure would only mount when camping or long road tripping, but it's very cost-effective!
Big fan.

How much extra fuel do you normally bring?

All, here's my deployment of the two-side Trailrax setup. Sorry these pics are not specifically taken for this thread, but they do show them off nicely. Also, if you are an astute observer, you can also see the Mountain Goats both low and high on the hill in the background within the pic of my Maxtrax (actually Rotopax) boards.

I have two 2-gallon tanks mounted on the driver side. Was leaning to the 3-gallon tanks but decided that 4 gallons should be a sufficient reserve. We'll see

Also, it only takes me several minutes to detach and I did decide to use four Rotopax Locking T Handles. Just for added security.

I've made three, three week trips with mine to the San Juans John without a problem. That's even staying several nights in Denver and the Springs. ;) I leave them off for everyday driving though.

I really like this setup! Are those truly Maxtrax boards or Rototrax boards? I wanted Maxtrax boards but I didn't think they were compatible with Rotopax mounting hardware.

Trail rax?

Not as friendly on the bank on the way in but more secure than a ratchet strap, and moves weight off the tailgate. Also capable of supporting 4 packs per side.

You worried about breaking off the little lip on the hard top? Not really much supporting tons of weight on that rail that was designed to be a simple rain gutter. I like the idea, just worried about the hardtop failing

Mark, Good catch. I did indeed order them from Rotopax.
