I just ordered a 2020 Willis version (2 door manual). It comes standard with rock rails, but my wife, who is short, wants nerf bars with steps. I don’t think I need the rails since almost all of my off-road driving will be forest trails - no rocky terrain around here. Are the rock rails just bolted on and easy to remove, or are they welded or otherwise attached?

Welcome to the forum. I'd not get to concerned about the few folks that have broken body mount bolts. Many more, like me don't have issues. Read up on how to remove them and you will be fine or have it done. Frame mounted rails are the way to go. JL's are weaker than JK's and need frame attachment. BTW, Willis was the family pronunciation of their name. Your Jeep is a Willys.
Thanks. Typo.

There are three bolts and six nuts on each side securing them on the vehicle on my 4 door Wrangler. A 2 door might just have a couple bolts and four nuts. They're really easy to install/remove, takes maybe 15 minutes tops.

I bought a set for my Sport S from a guy for $100. I see them for sale around me for $100-200.

There are a lot of options that bolt on over the existing rails and act as a step. This is how my wife currently gets into my JLUR.

I went with Ace Engineering. But like I said there are a lot of options.

I got the amp research powerstep XL power steps. All those that are short within my inner circle are very pleased with them.
Super easy, 1/2 hr per side, no special tools
Even a caveman can do it

Took a bit longer than that to finish the job, but the mounting was pretty straightforward, no drilling, and really nice finished look. I get plenty of people doing a double take when they see me open the door and the step moves down. Always interested, until they hear the price....

I like this idea but didn’t see any steps on the ace engineering website that bolted on to the existing rails. Has anyone seen these steps from another manufacture?

I looked for that extensively, but found the only options were not as good as the ones that remove the stock rails.
