Not sure if this helps but my 2020 had this "air leak" noise constantly at highway speed. Almost like either the seal in the windshield wasn't right or the windshield frame wasn't seated to the top properly. After some playing around, turns out it was this little guy on both the driver and passenger side:

Jeep Wrangler JL Road Noise 1715777264384-wz

These just above your mirror, if they are not flush they tend to howl a bit when at highway speeds. This might not be your issue but wanted to give a suggestion to troubleshoot, tape the edges off and go for a drive. You can get them on allmopar parts for like $8 a piece.

MY22 JLUR XR 3.6 torque w/SOT and 25k on 35ā€ KO2s and a MY24 JLUR X 3.6 non-torque w/SOT and 6k on 35ā€ KO2s, these are our first Jeeps and I honestly am amazed at how quiet they are. Neither wind noise or road noise is noticeable. I rarely exceed 65 to 70 mph. However, I do drive around 98% of the time with the SOT open and all windows down and half the time with the rear quarter panel windows out. This config is windy and noisy, but still not unbearably. I often take phone and conference calls while driving with the hands free Bluetooth and no issues. I try and keep the tires inflated (cold) at 33 to 35 lbs.

I’m going to speculate a couple of things:

1. Tires are worn improperly or they are way overinflated.
2. The 4 cyl Turbo engine is loud and sounds horrible compared to the 3.6.
3. Your other car is a Lexus
4. I’m old and deef
I don't really notice road noise on my 2-door with hard top, even with mud tires. That's because the 4 cyl turbo drowns out all other noise!

And just for reference, my other car is a Lexus, and I am old and deaf!

Having said that, I really like the turbo engine's responsiveness (but the 3.6 does sound better).

Replace your exhaust with a straight pipe. Your exhaust noise will drown out the tire and wind noise. Problem solved! Think outside the box. Lol!
I'm pretty sure that would get tossed into the generic "road noise" bucket too.

If the tires are not original for your Jeep, they might have had extra mileage on them before being swapped onto your Wrangler. So tire wear could be part of the problem. Jeeps are inherently noisy. Just part of the experience. You can mitigate some of it with deadening materials, seals, headliner, tires etc. But you should definitely evaluate cost vs benefit. And although harsh, there is a kernel of truth to the guys saying that maybe the Wrangler is not a good fit for you. If you are concerned about road noise, and don't actually go wheeling with it, it might be worth considering the alternative vehicles that better suit your needs vs wants.

You know after reading remorseless' note I have to agree. If you need a meter to check the sound, sell that Jeep tomorrow. Get a nice Toyota Tundra or a Ford Raptor, Hot vehicles and very quiet, just saying and I mean no offense whatsoever.

That'd be great. I ordered a DB meter. The plugs are on my list to check. I think im going to test drive a hardtop with all season tires and get some DB readings aswell. Just need some data to refence off of. If the test drive is also "loud" then maybe I'm just getting old :)
I used a DB meter app on my iPhone, here’s a couple readings at 75mph, windows up, hardtop with OEM headliner + Redhead add on kit, OEM carpet, diesel engine, overhead light bar with six 7ā€ round lights, two 8ā€ bumper mounted lights, 38ā€ tires. Not the most aerodynamic rig šŸ˜‚

To be fair he could be experiencing higher than normal noise for a Jeep. Could be bad seals or something.

Yeah, I agree. I would have to drive it or go for a ride. So I guess anything I say is just assumptious at this point. But I am really curious

I just finished installing Kilmat and closed cell foam after reading this thread (noise reduction on post 11): https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/project-zero-20-jlur-and-craft-brew.48018/. I also installed the cover king hardtop liner on the freedom panels only and plan to do the back of the hardtop in a few weeks once I put my soft top on. I have a 3" lift and falken wildpeak AT3W 37s. I use the same Iphone app above and at 75mph I average 68-69db.

I will admit that taking out all the carpets and installing the dampening material did take more time and effort than I initially thought.

Even after driving all the way to Moab and back from LA I didn’t mind the noise. I may be half deaf though.

Was there a discernible difference for you after the Kilmat?

UPDATE: I had a chance to get DB readings the other day. The Jeep starts getting loud @ 60 mph, you could see it avg’d 75 dba. Increasing speed had little to no difference. I also placed the meter towards the SOT & down by the floor boards, it picked up 2db.

For comparison, i took some readings with my tow vehicle a ā€˜24 Silverado 2500HD (stock 4x4). This truck is a dream to drive on the highway. It was averaging 67db @ 70mph.

looks like it’s comparable to @ChuckQue results. My wife and I can have a conversation at highway speeds with our soft top down so I don’t know man, the Jeep just might not be your thing.

Great info! This gives me hope, a hardtop with HT 33’s should be quieter than your rig. Presently mine is just as loud as yours!
