My transmission has been shifting hard/shuddering on the 1-2 shift when warmed up for almost 2 years. I have ignored it because of the local dealers being so backlogged that it would be sitting for 6+ weeks to get looked at. My 3/36 basic warranty is about to expire and I am thinking of taking it in. I have an Asfir engine/transmission skid plate installed. Should I remove that before taking to dealer? Do they care about skids and will they want to charge me to remove and reinstall it?

I would bet they charge you for having to deal with it, if its easy I would remove it. Would also remove the possibility one tech removes it then after buttoning everything up its laying on a shelf somewhere, or they strip bolts using an impact wrench etc.

I wouldn't trust a dealer to remove/replace aftermarket skids. Most likely you'd be charged for the labor involved. They're not gonna properly torque the bolts... they may lose one.

Best of luck with the transmission issue. Tangentially, my selling dealer refuses to change the fluid in mine, even if I supply all necessary parts, deciding instead to lean on the "Lifetime Fill" language in the Owner's Manual.

As for the skid plate, yes, I'd suggest you'll be dinged for whatever labor expense can be assigned to its removal and reinstallation. The risk of having dealer staff do so (specifically, the potential damage caused by negligent use of an impact wrench) would compel me to remove it myself before the vehicle ever sees the Service Dept. Just a thought.

Labor time is $$ and someone has to pay for the time. Nobody rides for free.

Whether they charged me or not, I'd remove the skid plate out of basic courtesy. I added it, it will likely be in their way, so I'd remove it. It will remove headaches for everyone.

By that logic, it would be nice if a rotate and balance job covered five wheels. IfJeeps came from the factory with seven wheels, I would expect a seven wheel rotate and balance job.

Aluminum skids? Shouldn't be that hard to do yourself. (I recently--on garage floor--dropped/reinstalled a couple of the plates to access frame rail for hitch wire install). Dealer will certainly charge for labor and--how much trust do you have?--maybe mess up something.

The thing with tire rotations is that there are multiple ways to do it, it's not just 4 or 5 tire rotation and there isn't a single right way to do it. What matters is that it's always done the same way.

No matter how competent they are, different techs will rotate tires in different ways. Do it yourself so it's always done the same way.
