So I have 2020 jeep JL sport s with stock 345 gears. I bought a set of take off rims and tires 285/70/17 along with a rubicon suspension takeoffs my question is how will 456 gears do with 33s for the meantime. I plan to go 35s so that’s my next question lol. do 35s rub on stock rubicon suspensions any input would be great I plan on keeping the same 17 inch rims as well shop is asking 2600 after tax for full regearing UConn gears is that fair? I’m new to this any input is appreciated 🍻

Get 4.88 gears if you plan on going up to 35s. I have 35s with 4.88 and it’s perfect. Some may argue that 4.56 is fine but I think it lacks ideal power in my opinion.

Youre going to get 11 million and 1 answers on this. I run the stock Rubi 4.10s on 35s with the 4cyl auto and I have never once felt it was under powered on the street or in the rocks. @Remorseless here has 37s on the stock 4.10s same engine/trans combo and also doesnt feel any need to change.

Then you will get people that swear you need 4.88s on anything 33s and bigger at the least otherwise the Jeep will be a gutless wonder.

Really it comes down to what you think will be best, the 4.56s will work just fine for your 33s and 35s to come but 4.10s would be a better middle ground with the 33s.

How are you planning on using the Jeep? Where will you be driving it? What engine and transmission do you have? All of these things affect the gearing decision.

I had a 2 door with 33 and 4.88. It was very jerky with throttle response, but I could beat a Ferrari across the intersection.

Now I have 35s on stock 4.10, thinking I would need more, as I'm in mountains at 7000ft. It drives fine. It knows to be one gear lower on climbs. Saved $2500.

This is why I love 2wd low so much, I'm looking into rewiring my FAD so I can have it. Regearing is pretty moot if you can just drop into 2low for the easy/moderate stuff and have way more gear reduction than you get going from 4.10 to any other lower gears you can install.

Still salty they changed how it works for the JL, on the JK you could buy a cheap kit to have 2low.

Not following JK JL difference, Ive had both, I think JL is just like the JK. Oh you mean 2 wheel 2 low? Didnt know that was a thing. On my 73 Bronco, it's called a twin stick transfer case, which is also a great security item putting one into 4 lo.

To answer the original question, 4.56 gears would be fine on 33" tires. A Rubicon comes standard with 4.10's, and there is simply not a big difference between 4.10 and 4.56 gears.
As far as going with 4.56 or 4.88. Sure, personally I would probably go with 4.88 but I prefer lower gears in general. But I think 4.56 would be fine. To put this in perspective......while I stated there is not a huge difference between 4.10 and 4.56 there is a decent difference between 3.45 and 4.56.

4.56 gears with 35" tires will be geared lower than what the Sport was with stock gears and tires.

We ran 35s with a 3.73 ratio and a 4 speed transmission for a long time without issues. If you have the 8 speed automatic transmission, 3:45 will be ok for the 33s and 35s. If you want to improve your performance with the 35s, I would jump to 4:88 incase you decide to go with 37s in the future. As far as rubbing, yes, the 35s will rub on the sport fenders, even with the Rubicon suspension.

I regeared to 4.56 and drove for a bit on 33s. Power was great but ton of jerking and clunking with 6mt when disengaging clutch. After 35s it's smooth again with adequate power and torque balance. 5th gear is usable from 45mph, 6th from 55-60mph. On stock 3.45 and 33s. 5th was usable around 70mph, 6th was useless.

@Coreyb516, the massive differentiation that very few seem to be mentioning is: what engine do you have? The answers will be significantly different if you have a 3.6L versus, for example, a 3.0L EcoDiesel.
