Questionable Gifts

So I have been with my wife for about twelve years now, and for as long as I’ve known her I have discussed my love for Jeeps and my life’s ambition to get another one. In early December I made the decision to empty the Jeep fund (because who needs to pay off student loans or own their own house? A man must have priorities!) and began my hunt to find a Jeep that checked the majority of my boxes. Come Christmas I was met with smiling faces and a deluge of cosmetic accessories that vary wildly by genre and does not quite fit with the personality of the vehicle I am trying to cultivate. Ghostbusters themed stick figure family? Got that. Camouflage fender vent decals? I am the whitey from Missouri. A Jurassic Park license plate frame? Received, along with another frame for Sac State. My wife bought me an air freshener featuring characters from a show we like (Troy and Abed) which I dutifully hung from the rear-view mirror, only to be asked at work why I have a homosexual couple on my jeep.

For most of these Items I have been able to hold off putting them on for one reason or another, but my wife and her kin are somewhat sensitive when it comes to their feelings. Don’t get me wrong, they are enthusiastically wonderful people, and I am grateful for them and their generosity, but with my birthday a month away I can already foresee another wave of accessories that I probably wouldn’t have chosen for myself. Anyone else ever found themselves on the receiving end of gifts that didn't fit their vision?

My friends and family must hate me (or maybe the vehicles I've owned...maybe both! lol), because I've never ever gotten a gift for automotive usage...unless you count gas cards ?

Coincidentally, that attachment would serve double duty in a right-hand drive country. Turn it 180° and an entirely different sentiment will be relayed to oncoming drivers.

That's horrible, and something I probably would've got if they knew that the jeep wave was a thing.

I send my wife and family members links to specific items. The mystery of Christmas is reserved for the kids. Us adults prefer guaranteed smiles.

Make Amazon shopping list, share with members of the family. Like all good members of the family, they must be trained correctly.

I hide gifts in the closet lol. But those are usually from the kids. My wife always asks what I would like if buying for the Jeep. Then again she knows where the wish list is because its right next to hers lol.

You're too late

Whenever a new vehicle comes along (it's a rarity), I proudly, and pre-emptively, announce 2 things:

1) That this is the direction I think I'm going to take it. (whatever direction that may be)

2) Don't worry about gifts for the Jeep. The things I really want(ed), (winch, lift, tires, etc) are too expensive and I would feel horrible for anyone wanting to buy anything.


Plus, I'm extremely lucky....my wife just gets me.

I have the Avengers window sticker for the front from the family I don't mind, but they bought me a box of ducks for my bday...I hate the duck thing. Can't bring myself to tell them lol.

Sounds like it's time for a gift war.
Get her equally unappreciated things for her vehicle and expect her to happily drive around with them. Make her ask you to stop, at which point you negotiate a truce along the terms you're seeking.
