The problem with huge pay increases at the bottom is that right now a rising tide isn't floating all boats. The middle pay ranges aren't moving. Eventually they will have to as those positions will go unfilled as quality workers seeks opportunities elsewhere. Also, college is beginning to fall out of favor (for a multitude of reasons). Why spend 4 years and $100k dollars or more to get a job that starts at $25 hr/50k a year? Costco will pay that just for showing up.

Exactly. :like:

YouTube has certainly lowered entry barriers, but it has concurrently lowered the average perception and, critically, expectation of quality content. Maybe I'm biased; I cut my teeth on programs (example) that many of today's so-called content creators couldn't possibly hope to emulate. That they still get paid, sometimes quite well, for recurringly low-calorie stuff is just a representation of the times.
Stupid stuff is what gets the views, lol. There isn't much intellectual analysis on the videos that somehow get millions of views in a few hours. You've got to dig deep to get substance.

“Stupid stuff of no intellectual value.” Sounds like an increasingly accurate description of TFL.

They are now uploading videos on how to ...wait for it...build a barn...!

TFL ought to be changing its name to TFB: The Freaking Barn!

Not always. These guys are making much more making videos than rebuilding shoes, and they're really good at rebuilding shoes.

This guy makes more than enough to support himself and his hobby

And of course, this guy makes much more with videos than he does pulling stuck vehicles out of the sand.

The only people making out on it right now are those who are downsizing. Period.

I'm in southern Idaho, near Boise, and the real estate is crazy here.

We bought our 1800 sq. ft. house, built in 2000 and on 2.6 acres for $300K in Apr 2017.

Now it's appraised for $675K. No, really, we re-financed and know.

But, we have a 15 year old and 2 year old. We're not going anywhere.

My parents back in 1991 bought 10 acres with outbuildings and a 1940-50s home for around $230K. They foolishly tried to scheme and what not, but if they'd held on to it? Now not only would it be paid off, but as they retired they could have gotten at least a mil, probably more to a developer.

If you're downsizing due to a kid moving out, if you're retiring, this market is for you. Get it while the gettin's good.

No doubt it could be a steady income with good viewership, and there are lots of quality creators with interesting videos that can make it work.

But then there's clowns like Jake Paul who are famous for being stupid... ?‍♂

College degrees can serve as a compelled proxy for intelligence tests that the Federal gov't. won't allow employers to administer...not because they don't work, but because they would, and with politically inconvenient results. And so we have people who shouldn't be in college (for a multitude of reasons), but are so.

A University education will always have a place for those who should be there for the right reasons.

There's honest work and certainly good money in the trades, too. This nation would be well-served to direct more positive attention toward the inherent value of vocational training.

You all sound like my father when I was a kid, a long long time ago. Everything has been going up for years, when my parents bought their house in the early 50s it was $18,000, my first new car was $3,200, gas was around $.34 a gallon, Motel 6 only charged $6 a night, I also made a whole lot less money than I did later in my life. Yes things are now more expensive, but we also own more stuff. My first car, which I bought used I could not afford to put better tires on it, now it is hard to believe how much i have put into my JLUR. I will admit though housing prices are over whelming, both of my daughters are finding themselves priced out of the neighborhoods they want to live in, those same neighborhoods were not that far out of reach just 10 years ago.

He's talking a lot about the Skid Steer, so its right along the lines of what should go up on TFL Offroad.

I paid $250G for my house 20 years ago. My daughter just bought a Similar house last week in not as prime location as ours same square footage for $700G !!!!! World's gone mad I tell yah !!
I paid $389k for 3600 square feet in 2018, then needed to move to the suburbs and paid $840k for 3400 square feet in 2021. I’m a physician, and locked in a very low rate so I’ll be OK. But I don’t know how my kids will ever get started in life with prices like these.

A degree isn’t an automatic qualifier anymore. I’ve encountered far too many with bachelors degrees who can not compose a sentence or do simple math. It truly amazes me. Schools do neither their students nor the institution itself any favors by passing someone through to graduation that doesn’t deserve to be there.

I do wonder about the long-term effects of when, not if, landlords really begin to raise rents in earnest,
Absolutely going to be an issue. A friend of mine cannot "afford" to buy, but her apartment (1BR) costs more than my 3 year old house monthly excluding taxes. She is very worried about her next lease renewal.

We’d like to downsize, but we’d wind up paying a fortune for less home. Crazy times. Son is trying to buy a house and people are actively bidding thousands (and tens of thousands) of dollars MORE than the asking price?.

Sell your house to your son and move into
His basement. Great downsizing plan.

Inflation is real, but you also have to recognize that product quality (tech in particular) is also a lot higher in most cases as well. You can buy 4k TVs for less than $500... when a 720p used to cost several thousand a decade or so ago.

The cost of debt is also a lot cheaper which is what is driving up prices in many cases.

Yep. That's the natural outcome of what I mention in post 37.

If you really want to throw a wrench in the works, ask your new hire to write a sentence -- just one! -- in legible cursive. Remember to hide your surprise, or contempt, if they ask you what "cursive" means.
