I ran 91 octane while Trump was president. I have been running 87 octane since Biden has been president. No difference in performance or to the wallet.
Funny comment but not at all accurate. At least around here. Regular is far higher than Premium used to be. YMMV… not mine.

Tyler, please see the following thread (shown below). It's quite long but thorough. I've made lots of posts on the subject, many have to do with the phenomenon called 'knock' and what you as a driver can do to try and prevent it.

Here's just one of my posts near the end of my many attempts to help clarify why running higher octane fuel is certainly in your engine's best interest. But unfortunately so many people need to justify their own reasons to use lower octane fuel. I have crafted some very detailed and technical descriptions of why you should shy away from using lower octane offerings.

In the end, maybe the need to be frugal is the most important outcome independent of anything else. Still nonetheless, enjoy your own research.

Search for the word 'knock' within the following thread, it should become rather enlightening.

I believe that where you buy the gas from is most important. Sunoco/Mobil type of gas has additives that make the engine run better than the generic gas from an independent no brand name station. I can definitely feel more of a difference from high/low grade fuel than jumping up an octane level.

I seem to have an emotional issue to use higher octane fuel.

When I fill it up with 87, I start sweating, I get anxious. This eventually leads to a deep depression. “What have you done to your poor Jeep, you unworthy asshole!” the voice in my head berates me.

My Jeep though, which is my safe-place, advice-giving, comfort animal always says “Dude, relax, I feel GREAT!” at which point my Jeep holds me and comforts me.

I may need counseling…
I feel your pain. I do the same. Maybe we could get some Group Counseling!

You MUST use jet fuel in it or it will go so slow.

Seriously though, I've yet to see someone take their Jeep to run on a dyno with both 87 and 91 and see if there are noticeable performance gains. I don't see any performance gains in CO going to "premium". I run 85 from Costco, no knocking and that's my biggest concern with lower octane.
JP-5 baby!

Shell actually does the most for their fuels that I am aware of! My old man works in specialty fuels and supplies a lot of gas companies with test fuels and things of that nature and Shell apparently is the best, but he likes Mobile as well. Not a lot of Sunocos around me so he has never mentioned them.

Overall, any big name pump is going to better than gambling on bargain gas.

I always liked Shell. I would typically go to their stations when I lived in WI. Now I'm in CO and I can't find any Shell stations. Costco it is for me now.

When I lived in Arizona, the local Shell station was the place to get fuel above all others. Whatever additive they use made my vehicles run better and get better mileage.

Now that I’m in California, they have crap fuel at every station. Because of the crap California fuel, I’m afraid to run less than premium in my vehicles.
