Newb here. Getting close to finally pulling the trigger on my first Jeep. Provided I don’t go gladiator, I’m set on a used Willys 2020-2023 is realistically what’s in my budget. That said, I’m seeing pretty good deals for low mileage 3.0s and I understand the extra maintenance costs associated with diesel, but I’m more concerned about the ongoing issues folks have had. The few I’m eyeing are CPO and assuming recalls have been addressed do I pull it or try to find a gas powered? Sorry, I’m sure these type of questions have been beaten to death

Not directly answering your question, but check the spreadsheet in my sig before assuming you can't buy new.
Thanks. I’ll check it out.

I've owned my 23 Rubicon with the 3.0 since new. 14K on it so far, at least 4 times I have added 2.5 g of DEF(1/2 tank). 2 oil changes so far from dealer and just had the HPFP recall taken care of. Glovebox release arm broke and rear wiper arm plastic cracked, both repaired, other than that no issues. Love the torque and made MOAB trails a breeze!

~<1% of diesel owners have issues. You'll never see someone come on here and post, "Hey I've got no problems with my diesel," because that's not an interesting or engaging topic of conversation. Because of that, any post about an issue gets blown up and floated to the top. It's not as bad as it seems. There is an open recall for the fuel pump that takes less than a day to complete and parts are available for it.

I've got a '21 Rubicon diesel, and it's the best wrangler I've ever owned.

I’m planning on test driving one and I’m sure I’ll be sold. Seems like with proper care and maintenance expectations, it could be the way to go especially the prices I’m seeing for pre owned. I guess the diesel mkt is a niche mkt and the negative reviews have swayed some folks.

You can count me as happy as can be about my EcoDiesels. We have a 21JLURD, wife's, and a 22JTRD, mine.
Neither have had any real issues.
My Mom has a Wrangler with the 3.6 and my mother in law has a Grand Cherokee with the 3.6, both are turds compared to the diesel in my opinion.

That and, in some parts of the country, diesel is as much as $1 more per gallon than regular.

It's the sheer complexity that has encumbered modern diesels for 20+ years now that puts me off the idea of owning one, no matter the brand of vehicle.

The traditional advantages of a diesel engine -- relative simplicity and robustness, and a fuel that was observably less expensive than petrol -- have been permanently lost to history.

My father and my brother are both long-term diesel owners. I've had constant access to their vehicles and to their ownership experiences. When those engines are running as they should -- and to be fair, theirs usually are -- they're a joy to drive. When a maintenance or especially a repair item comes due, though, it's as though the words Inexpensive and Easy cease to exist.

To each their own, always, but for this fellow? Nein, danke.

good to know. Glad I threw the question out. I was essentially limiting my search to the 3.6 or 2.0, to avoid all of the highly talked about issues with the diesel.

Ok I'm getting on my soap box here. I own 4 ecodiesel's 2 are demo's for my dealership( me and my son's demo's) I have owned 30+ new Jeep's by far the best combination hands down! I loved my 392's but if I had to choose 1 it'd be the ecodiesel hands down. Maintenance cost is made up in fuel economy and the power and torque on and off road is just awesome!! The recall is a breeze if it hasn't been done . We're totaling close to 180k miles for the 4 and zero issues. My advice if you haven't yet go drive them both but when you get to the dealership park on the pavement because you'll throw rocks at the 3.6! I've been a Jeep guy 40 years in my opinion Theres never been a better combination period!! Good luck with that new ecodiesel ??

Thanks for the advice. I’m planning on test driving the eco diesel as soon as I can find one close by. The few that I’m eyeing in my price range/trim/color are hours away. Just trying to avoid a money pit in terms of repairs on my first Jeep. Do you think I need to get a CPO or will balance of factory warranty be sufficient? Not asking you to predict the future just curious your take given your experience. Haha.

So I don't think Cpo is necessary as long as the remainder of factory warranty is still active.(you can call Jeep with vin# they will tell you how much warranty is left on that Jeep) Also a ecodiesel has a 5 year 100k mile drivetrain warranty!! From my experience as a dealer that goes to auctions several times a week the diesels I seen have few problems. Don't listen to the haters that say value is going to drop....The value once all the diesels are gone will go back up I've watched it happen on other Jeep diesel products once production has stopped awhile. There are very few out there getting traded in if you see one at an auction atleast in my area if its nice it will bring a premium already. Good luck
