Hello forum - looking to get back in a Wrangler (owned two in my 20s) via a pre-owned JL.
I have a few nice options - 2019 model year with the 3.6L under 60k miles, however, one of the options is Certified Pre-Owned... but it is priced about $3k more with comparable features to the cheaper option. So my question is - what is CPO worth? Would you spend $1,000 more for CPO? $2,000? $3,000??

CPO really doesn't mean much at a Jeep dealer since dealing with actual factory warranty issues is bad enough. It does mean a little more when you are dealing with Audi, Lexus, Mercedes, Etc. Jeep service is just terrible every where you go so I would take it with a grain of salt.

I hear you... but I was thinking the most valuable part of CPO is that it passed the CPO checklist, meaning no issues or major abuse. I have had bad experiences with used cars so I am very afraid of getting a lemon.

Could always pay another dealer to perform an pre purchase inspection.

Well that is the main purpose of a CPO, and it should provide comfort to some degree in buying a used vehicle from a Dealer, although I just don't trust jeep dealers anymore. Most service departments can't fix the simplest of issues without screwing something else up. If you have someone you can trust who is an experienced mechanic that can give it a once over that would mean more to me than a Jeep CPO. just my two cents.

Depending on the dealer, you may get up to a 100k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with the CPO stamp. While that may not mean much to some people, it can pay for itself very quickly. So IMHO it is worth the additional $3,000 since you would pay that much for an aftermarket warranty that wouldn't be as much coverage.

Welcome to the forum, Ryan.

My new Jeep purchase in 2020 was an outlier, as it had been my decades-long habit to purchase Certified Used vehicles as a matter of personal policy. That was a very cost-effective M.O. because I know just enough to perform a competent pre-purchase inspection on my own, and especially because a plurality of said certified vehicles wore a Honda badge.

So, CPO (or whatever they're being called) vehicles are, in my experience, a good bet. The price premium can usually be crosswalked, at least in part, to the extended warranty that tends to accompany such vehicles, and/or any extra prep that the dealer invested in the vehicle in order to present it well.

As any lemon lawyer knows, most of the defective vehicles are returned because most service departments can't fix the simplest of issues without screwing something else up. I agree with this. Not to mention the fact many times they don't honor their own warranty so you are paying for something that you can't even use.
