Power steering fluid

do you guys just turkey baster and top off the reservoir? Or is there a more comprehensive way to flush the system, and refill?

Also I'm reading Pentosin CHF 11S satisfies MS-11655. I've had good experience with that in the past so I might lean towards that fluid.

I plan to do my via turkey baster method at 20K and will be using Pentosin as well since it can be found cheaper than the Mopar stuff.

Soo the guy from autozone gave me power steering fluid from Prestone and says Jeep on there so I want to top it off and it’s green color but I’m reading that it needs special hydraulic fluid. Will be fine?

It has to say this: MS-11655 on the label to satisfy your Jeep's requirements. The reason regular old power steering fluid does not meet that standard is the JL uses an electronic power steering system. MS-11655 is the type of power steering fluid for electronic power steering systems. If the Prestone bottle doesn't have that number on there, I wouldn't use it.

Had the steering box TSB done and this is the fluid they used at the dealership. Had to have them top off the reservoir tank as it was a little low a few days after the work was complete.

I went to the dealer today and asked them for a bottle of fluid and this is what they sold me, I asked if other power steering fluid sold at places like Autozone and Advance and the parts guy just looked at me and said why take a chance for a few dollars savings.......needless to say I left with a bottle of it and also a jug of OAT coolant

Quick Google search shows prices starting around $11.50 (at various online dealers) all the way up to almost $30 (on amazon)

I would highly recommend using fluids that are spelled out in the owners manual. Today’s vehicles are complex, yesterday’s fluids don’t always work in today’s vehicles. If you’d see some of the damage I’ve seen over the years (and $$ to fix) of DIYers using wrong fluids, you’d be scared straight.
You don’t have to buy it from a dealer, but that’s a sure way to get the right stuff. Aftermarket companies make it too, and cheaper, it’s just a little harder to be sure you’re getting the correct formula.

I paid $16.50 for the PS fluid and $18 for the coolant, I did find a few places online but after shipping it raised the price a fair amount, the Dealer Is literally 5 mins from where I live.

i likely could have saved several dollars between the two but I knew I would get the right stuff from them, heck the Service Advisor told me to pull it around and they would top it off for free but I just chose to have some extra

Rockauto with the $8 shipping is like $20 but maybe if you spend more shipping is free ?

I figure since my JL is paid for and only has 38k miles I better take good care of it and not try to save a few dollars and possibly add the wrong stuff and do damage, I fear the days of the old green Prestone antifreeze and ATF fluid for the tranny and PS is long gone with these newer vehicles as they all seem to use some special fluid like I had never heard of OAT or HOAT coolant until I started searching

Yeah, whenever I order from Rockauto it's a laundry list of stuff for all my vehicles so shipping isn't as much of a concern. And true that on the special fluids these days, best not to gamble, especially while in warranty coverage.

Pentosin CHF can be bought at Advanced Auto parts as a stock item. It's under $20 for a bottle.

Another person stated that the 2019+ models have the MAX MIN lines. My 2018 unfortunately does not.

I know it has been a long time since you made this post... BUT.... did you ever find the MAX MIN lines on your 2018 JL's Steering Fluid Reservoir?

Anyway, if you have not.... get a good light and a step stool ... Climb up and look at the backside of the reservoir..... the side facing the fire wall. If you look real close you will see the MAX MIN lines.

I had to really look close to find the lines. After I found the lines, I used a black Sharpie to make lines in corresponding places on the front of the reservoir..

I just had my steering gearbox replaced yesterday. I would be willing to bet they used this stuff as the fluid looks like it may be dark green in the reservoir.

Were I you, I would be stopping back at the dealership, ASAP (while the Tech remembers) and asking to speak to the Tech that did the replacement... Tell him thanks, but you need to know exactly what he used fluid wise.. IF he is any kind of a Tech, he will understand why you want to know exactly..

You can't mix this chitt, so if you need to add (and you will at some point in time... maybe even now) you will need to know / must know, EXACTLY what was used) "Willing to bet", you think is not going to cut it so to speak.

Also, when the JL has been sitting / not running say all night, DO check the fluid level. Should be between the Min and Max.

You will see the lines for Min and Max on the back side of the reservoir.
Do yourself a favor and with a Sharpie, mark the front of the reservoir for future/easy reads.
