Possible UAW Strike

JLEngineline. i read the article. would there be or any talk on a retro pay, back pay to compensate for the bad deal on the last contract. i understand if you cant comment on that.

We tried to take it to court to get the contract overturned but the judge didn't agree with us and threw it out of court. I'm not sure how hard they actually tried though.

This is a very interesting article on why the strike got to where it is now and how corrupt many of these UAW leaders are. I feel for the workers as the people they pay dues to represent and fight for them clearly have their own ambitions:

96% of the workers approved the strike mandate. This suggests that, while there are definite concerns about the leadership at the UAW, the vast majority of workers do believe that their interests are still being represented. Unions are democratic. I'm sure that within the organization, there is movement to ensure the corruption is cleaned up.

Thanks Maverick. I would normally agree with you. But my local voted over 97% in favor of a strike. I wish I could explain why the membership feels this way, unfortunately FCA monitors everything I post on this forum and right now is not a good time to be " Insubordinate " as they are looking for any reason to fire people. Yes they are just horrible. Remember there would be ZERO jobs if not for the crappy CEOs and corporations you hate so much. I suggest you take all your millions and start your own company and see how that goes.

I guess I see it both ways. The UAW is costing GM tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars by walking. I have never worked for any union but the way the rest of the world works is if you stopped showing up to work you are fired. And you cannot file for unemployment.

It seems to me this is really poor planning on UAW leadership and they should have informed the workers before they voted that there is potential for GM to not cover healthcare and other benefits during the strike. And also the potential for GM to find temporary workers if they choose to.

Yeah, it's the union. It has nothing to do with the average line worker makes 70-80k a year and the CEO makes 22 million. Nah, nothing.

I have read this.

I guess that I don’t understand.

Talks between the union and GM have broken down and the union called the strike as previously authorized by the members by a democratic vote of the members.

It is estimated that GM’s shareholders (remember, the company is owned by the public.... teacher pension funds, state pension funds, fidelity mutual funds, me, you, grandma) are going to lose, by some estimates, $70m to $100m per day (in cash out of the company) that the strike carries on. That lose of cash impact the value of the company.

Why should those shareholders also pay for healthcare of striking employees during the strike? Seems to me like the Union should cover that out of the dues that the members pay. Isn’t that the point of the union? Unions put themselves between the member and the company and act as the “representative” for the member with the company. Union members pay dues. So, the union, who decided to strike should have to pay ALL of the worker’s loses, right?

Isn’t that what a strike is all about? The union is telling the company to screw themselves..... the members want a better deal than the company wants to give and are willing to forgo pay and benefits to get it by inflicting financial pain on the company (and by default other people’s pensions and investment portfolios). Well, ok. That’s fine. Go strike and forego your benefits and pay.

I thought that was the whole point.
