It’s always been that way for me with warranty work. I have always been asked to agree to pay in case it turns out to be something that is not covered. Not a fan of this.

I hope Jeep Cust Service comes through..

I'm wondering.. this leak was that bad where it left you on the highway? Did it lock up or something cause it leaked out all the oil? There was no evidence where parking it was leaking? Sorry.. just trying to understand so I can be on the lookout for issues that are not apparent if so. I am an auto though but don't like the sounds of this response from the Jeep dealer.

My leased 2018 JLU with 5000 miles lost power the other day so I had it towed to the local dealership. They called me yesterday to say there is a leak in the (manual) transmission and that due to Chrysler rules I have to authorize them to charge me at $135/hour for 9 hours just to investigate it in case there was abuse. I refused even though I'm the only person who drives it so I know 100% there has been no abuse.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?? It's a lease and under warranty!
Hi jeepblogger,

Wash your damn Jeep before you take it in to the dealership. It makes you look bad and it makes working on it a pain in the ass.
Haha I normally sneak out in the middle of the night to hand wash the undercarriage thoroughly before my service appointment next morning. It’s so clean that you can literally lick it before taking it in to the shop.

Why middle of the night? So my gf is asleep and don’t think I’m some sort of a freak.

You gotta be kidding me. It crapped out on the freeway.
Have it towed home then get Jeep to pay for the tow. Dealerships love any excuse they can get to not do warranty work, off roading is a great one.

I have to admit, if I was a service writer and I saw a Jeep come to the shop on a tow truck with a dead manual transmission and it was "super muddy" on the outside (and presumably the undercarriage too) it would throw a ton of red flags. Can't argue with that.

HOWEVER, I advise you to be cautious because I've seen this happen before. The Chrysler dealership in my town was doing warranty work for people, making up some story about why the customer needed to pay money, THEN they would turn the repair into Chrysler for reimbursement. So basically, they were double dipping. Gettin' paid twice for each job.

When they got busted, Chrysler sent lawyers and law enforcement and seized the keys to all their inventory and then a couple of days later a convoy of semi trucks showed up and removed all the vehicles on the lot. We were without a dealership for a couple of years until another franchise bought it and reopened it.

If there isn’t any modifications tied to the Powertrain / transmission that would are visibly obvious (lift, aftermarket wheels, tires etc.) that would cause premature wear or damage to your transmission they can’t charge you squat to investigate under warranty bumper to bumper warranty.

I do not understand why some dealer are like this. It does seem like a scam.
I have had some strange things happen at my local dealership too.
I live in a small town we only have 1 jeep dealer. When I was looking to buy my jeep I went in there. They offered me 20 K for my trade in. I thought that was low so I went to the big city a hour and a half away from my home. I got $26500 for my trade. that was a $6500 difference. Then on top of that the city dealer was over $2k lower in price. So you all know where I bought my Jeep.

Then as some of you know on this forum I had a major health scare in November that put me in and out of the hospital for 6months. So I did not want to take my jeep all the way to the big city for the track bar wield recall and I was having death wobble problems. So as the OP here I too thought all dealer would be happy to take a service appointment.

Wow was I wrong The lady at the service counter told me that she had been there for over 15 years and never heard of death wobble. And ask me when was the last time I had a Alignment. And I would have to pay to have a alignment done. The Jeep only had 7000 kms on it I had not drove it since my incident with my health in November.

So I called the other dealer I bought it from and told them the hole story, The Recall notice the death wobble, and me living 1 and a half hours away and my health issues. The service guy told me to wait a min. Then the service manager comes on the phone and says sir we will order everything you need and have it here waiting for you. We will make sure you are taking care right away and have me on my way as soon as possible. 4 days later I went in they did everything and more I was in and out of there in about 2 and half hours the service was great there was no cost and they even washed my Jeep. As up here in Canada it was covered in salt and dirt that they put on our roads in the winter. so it was very dirt when I got there.

I wish there was a standard for the way all dealership take care of there customers. but if I was you I would never go back to that dealer And start looking for a new one.

PS I have lots of mods on my Jeep and the dealer has never said anything. But they also installed my lift and tires

All this complaining that they can’t do this, umm they can.

Under warranty or not, they need authorization to inspect the vehicle to determine if the issue falls under warranty or not. If it is a warranty item, you don’t get charged, your junk gets fixed and you go on your merry little way.

Honestly I don’t know what all the damn whining is about. I just dealt with the similar issue with my wife’s Ram 2500 where the transmission went out, the only difference was her junk has a 3” lift and 37’s so we had an added dynamic of potentially having to prove the modifications were not the cause. In any case we had to agree to a $500 tear town so they could determine the cause of the failure. If the failure was a defect, no issues, no out of pocket my junk gets fixed. If not a defect, then we would be on the hook for the $500 which would effectively go towards the repair if we had them fix the truck. Ultimately they found that the cause of the issue was a cracked valve body which was covered under warranty and no out of pocket by us.

Moral of the story, if you’re confident you are not the cause of the issue, put on your big boy pants, agree to the diagnostic fee and let them figure out what is wrong with your junk. If it truly is a warranty item, you will not be out anything. If it’s not under warranty, then yes you’re on the hook for the diagnostic fee.

I've had my fair share of crappy dealings with our local Jeep dealers.
Our most recent visit the dealer wanted to return my wife's Jeep to stock because the pedal assembly was creaking.

I recently purchased a 2017 F350 with 90k miles. When I went to look at it the CEL came on showing an underboost code. I decided to make an offer and purchase it as is. Well when I looked at the warranty papers after I already purchased the truck I realized the diesels have a 100k mile warranty. I took it in and the dealer wanted to charge me a $250 diagnostic fee to verify it was a warranty issue. I pleaded with them to hook up the scanner and pull the code. They refused, and said I would have to pay the diagnostic fee.

I left the dealer and drove the truck really hard because I was so annoyed. Fortunately for me my "Italian tuneup" cleared the check engine light.

It's really a shame that we have to fight so damn hard to get something fixed that is supposedly included with our vehicle purchases.

Warranty covers both transmission and clutch for 12,000 miles then just the transmission after that. It does not cover abuse , mistreatment or modification of the transmission. But it does not say that the owner is responsible for diagnostic charges to determine that it was one if those issues. It does require you to talk with the dealership owner or general manager to try to resolve it then Jeep will step in. Ask them to show you where in the warranty it says you are required to pay diagnostic costs. If they diagnosis the cause is one of those three and deny warranty then they should charge you for that and the two of you will probably end up in arbitration or court.

Good luck.
