New to me 2019 JLU. Just noticed this on the two bottom, left-side driver / passenger door hinges. All the others are perfectly smooth. I don't see any rust in the area. What's going on here and what can I do about this?

It’s called galvanic corrosion, and is most prevalent on JLs from 2018-2018. It is caused by an electro-chemical reaction that happens between two unlike pieces of metal, in this case the aluminum doors and steel hinges. It is NOT a rust or paint problem, but is a manufacturing problem that is being addressed by Chrysler as long as your car is within the 5 year warranty period and mileage is within certain parameters. There is reportedly a long waiting list of people waiting to get their vehicles fixed and repainted, so it is important to go through a dealer to get on that list. Do not ignore it since the damage (in my case with a 2020) will spread to doors and even the hood, since it is an electrochemical reaction. Also, I am told the problem accelerates if you are near salt water.

This. I’ve given up on caring about it. Every jeeps gonna have it sooner or later, not just on the hinges.

Mine had it. While still under warranty I look it in and my local Jeep Dealer warrantied it. apparently if it is on one hinge they replace both. I had it on one hinge on each door + one on tailgate and one on hood + front of hood. They basically repainted my whole Jeep. Then I had it ceramic coated. Looks brands new.

Yes, every automobile is prone to rust, but not at this level, speed, or pace. The problem stems from the aluminum material used in JLs since 2018 to lighten the car and increase MPG ratings. It has been identified as galvanic corrosion in published technical bulletins and can possibly be corrected through very exacting repair and repainting processes. Chrysler is ‘graciously’ acknowledged paint warranties for those who qualify. For those who do not, there may be serious safety issues down the road and at the very least a car with plummeting resale value.

Here is a link to an enlightening article. I have also attached a copy of the technical bulletin detailing the repair and paint process.

Get it documented before you reach the 5 year mark from the purchase date. Even if they do not work on it before the 5 year mark, you have to get it documented. Make sure you get acknowledgement from the dealer in writing that you have contacted them about it. Don't let them drag it out too long though...

Really glad I posted about this, I had no idea. It's a 2019 but I'm the second owner. So I'm right at the cutoff, possibly over. Is the 5 year warranty automatic or would that have been something the 1st owner or myself would have had to purchase? And do you think me being the 2nd owner affects anything?

no need to do anything by either the previous owner or you. As long as the Jeep is within the 5yrs from original purchase date and you have a dealer document it, Jeep will take care of it (eventually; I hear it’s not fast)

I believe the warranty starts on the date of the original purchase and is typically transferred to a new owner. It is worth a shot to convince the dealer to submit a request to Chrysler approve the repair. I would hope a large company faced with what could be a PR issue might concede and do the repairs. But, they also might be unwilling to set a precedent. Keep me posted on what happens.

Did they do the ceramic coating or did you have to do it? Reason I ask is there is no guarantee the fix will be permanent and certainly not covered under an additional warranty.
