Hi, I just bought a used 2020 wrangler unlimited a couple weeks ago. I didn’t notice this when test driving etc but there is some bubbling paint near the rear passenger door hinge. I called the dealer and a couple other jeep dealers and they basically are giving me the run around. One body shop telling me it’s not even worth doing any repair because all the hinges will eventually do this. I still have about 3 months of corrosion warranty remaining. Any one have any luck with this issue?

Keep hounding the dealers. The bubbling under the paint (corrosion on the aluminum) is a well known problem and it is covered by the 5 yr unlimited mileage corrosion warranty. There is a new door hinge available now that has a zinc plate on it to help with future issues.

There is a ton of folks that have had it done, I am scheduled for repairs in May.

Cool thanks. I need to follow up with them. Another quick question. The info they gave me at the dealer indicated there was a three year warranty on the vehicle, meaning that since it is a 2020 there would be until this June. I am seeing in various places online, and now you mentioned as well, a five year warranty. The stuff online suggested jeep extended the warranty to 5 years. Do you know anything about that? Just curious as to how much time I’ve got left and how quickly I should move on this OR wait to see if it happens to other hinges as well. Thanks

The JL comes with a 3 year/36,000 mile "bumper to bumper" warranty. It also has a 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty, 8 year/80,000 mile emissions warranty. I don't know what the corrosion warranty is, but your owner's manual will tell you. The warranty(s) begin the date of the vehicle being first sold.

I have a 2019 JLRU with paint hinge issues. I bought it in Oregon moved to Michigan and then Ohio. It took me 6 months to get the local dealer to get things taken care of and they missed a hinge completely. I showed them and they have never called me back and I can never get anyone to help me. I had another local dealer look at it and was told since I did not buy from them, they can't help me. I them to F-OFF and have their manager call me so that I can tell him the same thing!

Keep hounding them to make something happen!!

The basic warranty is 3 yr-36000 miles. The factory corrosion warranty is 5 years-unlimited mileage. This corrosion issue is being covered by the 5yr-unlimited warranty.

It’s called galvanic corrosion, and is most prevalent on JLs from 2018-2018. It is caused by an electro-chemical reaction that happens between two unlike pieces of metal, in this case the aluminum doors and steel hinges. It is NOT a rust or paint problem, but is a manufacturing problem that is being addressed by Chrysler as long as your car is within the 5 year warranty period and I was told mileage within certain parameters. There is reportedly a long waiting list of people waiting to get their vehicles fixed and repainted, so it is important to go through a dealer to get on that list. Do not ignore it since the damage (in my case with a 2020) will spread to doors and even the hood, since it is an electrochemical reaction. Also, I am told the problem accelerates if you are near salt water.

Thanks for responding. I did get all hinges, doors and hood and tailgate all repainted with a plastic type piece between the hinge and the body all done last summer and haven’t seen any issues since. Basically got a whole new paint job lol. Thanks again!

If you had corrosion along the edge of any of those panels (hood, doors, tailgate), it will unfortunately come back. The latest TSB requires replacement of any panels with corrosion away from the hinges.

Thanks. I believe I posted a TSB today that noted that fact, but please post your copy if you can as well. The more Jeep owners who know about this problem the better.
